The Great Debate: Robotic vs Traditional Surgical Approach in the Acute Care Setting
Am Surg. 2024 Apr 24:31348241248802. doi: 10.1177/00031348241248802. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTRobotic surgery was first introduced in the 1980s as a system to aid patients in the battlefield. Since then, robotic surgery has become an important minimally invasive tool and plays an important role in elective surgery among various surgical specialties. However, the role for robotic surgery in the emergent setting is not well established or studied. Robotic surgery has been shown to be advantageous to both patients and operating surgeons. Though limited, studies have found robotic surgery in the acute setting to be safe f...

Incorporating Robotic Cholecystectomy in an Acute Care Surgery Practice Model is Feasible
DISCUSSION: Robotic CCY is associated with fewer open conversions and otherwise similar outcomes compared to laparoscopic CCY in the non-elective setting. Incorporation of robotic CCY in a busy ACS practice model is feasible with available resources.PMID:38654460 | DOI:10.1177/00031348241248816 (Source: The American Surgeon)

Physiotherapy for continence and muscle function in prostatectomy: a randomised controlled trial
CONCLUSION: Supervised PFMT can improve postoperative UI and PFM function after RARP. Further studies are needed to confirm whether intra-anal pressure reflects PFM function and affects continence status in UI in men who have undergone RARP.PMID:38658057 | DOI:10.1111/bju.16369 (Source: Cancer Control)

Modified Q-type purse-string suture duodenal stump embedding method for laparoscopic gastrectomy for gastric cancer
This study introduced the modified Q-type purse-string suture duodenal stump embedding method, a convenient way to strengthen the duodenum, and compared it to the conventional one to assess its efficacy and sa... (Source: BMC Surgery)

Gallbladder Cancer
Gallbladder cancer is the most common biliary tract malignancy, often detected incidentally post-cholecystectomy or at an advanced stage, historically linked to a poor prognosis. Advances in minimally invasive surgery and systemic therapies have improved outcomes. Global incidence varies, with risk factors including gender, age, gallbladder disease history, and polyp size influencing malignancy risks. Management involves cross-sectional imaging, staging laparoscopy in select cases, and radical cholecystectomy with lymphadenectomy and adjuvant therapy, though its use is limited. Trials are ongoing assessing the role of neoa...

Cancers, Vol. 16, Pages 1641: Detection and Real-Time Surgical Assessment of Colorectal Liver Metastases Using Near-Infrared Fluorescence Imaging during Laparoscopic and Robotic-Assisted Resections
Conclusions: ICG fluorescence imaging can be integrated with other conventional intraoperative imaging techniques to optimize intraoperative staging. Rim fluorescence proved to be a valid indicator of the resection margins: by removing the entire fluorescent area, a tumor-negative resection (R0) is achieved. (Source: Cancers)

Exceptional lymph node recurrence of an unusual ovarian tumor 16 years later: a case report
ConclusionSex cord-stromal tumors with annular tubules is a slow-growing ovarian tumor with a high potential for recurrence and metastasis. Surgery is the mainstay of treatment. Due to the rarity of these tumors, they are often unsuspected and thus incompletely staged before primary surgery; the diagnosis is made by histological examination. The prognosis of these patients is unknown, and they require long-term follow-up. (Source: Journal of Medical Case Reports)

Laparoscopic repair of duodenal atresia: systematic review and meta-analysis after consistent implementation of the technique in the past decade
ConclusionsLRDA showed equivalent complication rates compared to OR with an additional benefit of quicker establishment of feeds. There was no significant difference in complication and conversion rates between laparoscopic techniques. Despite a longer operative time, LRDA provides a safe minimal access approach for neonates after this consistent implementation of the technique in the past decade. (Source: Surgical Endoscopy)

Minimally invasive versus open multivisceral resection for rectal cancer clinically invading adjacent organs: a propensity score-matched analysis
ConclusionMIS had several short-term advantages over open surgery, such as lower complication rates, faster recovery, and a shorter hospital stay, in rectal cancer patients who underwent multivisceral resection.Graphical abstract (Source: Surgical Endoscopy)

Cancers, Vol. 16, Pages 1631: Laparoscopic Treatment of Bulky Nodes in Primary and Recurrent Ovarian Cancer: Surgical Technique and Outcomes from Two Specialized Italian Centers
Conclusions: The results of our study are consistent with those reported in the literature, demonstrating that MIS may represent a safe approach in advanced and recurrent EOC with nodal metastasis if performed on selected patients by expert surgeons with an adequate setting and appropriate technique.
