Viruses, Vol. 16, Pages 631: Favipiravir Treatment Prolongs Survival in a Lethal BALB/c Mouse Model of Ebinur Lake Virus Infection
This study explored the antiviral effects of two broad-spectrum antiviral drugs, favipiravir and ribavirin, in a BALB/c mouse model. Favipiravir significantly improved the clinical symptoms of infected mice, reduced viral titer and RNA copies in serum, and extended overall survival. The median survival times of mice in the vehicle- and favipiravir-treated groups were 5 and 7 days, respectively. Favipiravir significantly reduced virus titers 10- to 100-fold in sera at all three time points compared to vehicle-treated mice. And favipiravir treatment effectively reduced the virus copies by approximately 10-fold across the thr...

Plans to expand African vaccine production face steep hurdles
In March 2022, when the pandemic was still raging, the messenger RNA (mRNA) company Moderna announced it would build a $500 million plant in Kenya to manufacture half a billion doses of its COVID-19 vaccine annually. “ This is major ,” Kenyan President William Ruto said at the time. The plant would help reduce Africa’s dependence on vaccines produced elsewhere, Ruto said—a situation that had turned disastrous during the pandemic—and bring economic benefits as well. But Moderna may never break ground on the Kenya factory. On 11 April, the company said it had “paused its efforts” becau...

Implementation of a Pediatric Trauma Registry at a National Referral Center in Kenya: Utility and Concern for Sustainability
Pediatric trauma is a global problem that disproportionately affects low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) with high death rates. The uneven distribution of morbidity and mortality is partially a result of unsafe living, working and travel environments as well as decreased access to timely, coordinated emergency care [1,2]. One main limitation to developing interventions and attracting funding streams is the paucity of published data on the epidemiology of pediatric trauma in many LMICs. Public health literature promotes use of trauma registries to inform policy priorities and quality improvement effort to strengthen tr...
