Thirst: neuroendocrine regulation in mammals
AbstractAnimals can sense their changing internal needs and then generate specific physiological and behavioural responses in order to restore homeostasis. Water-saline homeostasis derives from balances of water and sodium intake and output (drinking and diuresis, salt appetite and natriuresis), maintaining an appropriate composition and volume of extracellular fluid. Thirst is the sensation which drives to seek and consume water, regulated in the central nervous system by both neural and chemical signals. Water and electrolyte homeostasis depends on finely tuned physiological mechanisms, mainly susceptible to plasma Na+ c...

Avian influenza H5N1 in a great white pelican (Pelecanus onocrotalus), Mauritania 2022
AbstractIn February 2022, mortalities among great white pelicans (Pelecanus onocrotalus) were reported in the Parc National de Diawling, southwestern Mauritania. Samples were collected and processed, indicating the presence of high pathogenicity avian influenza subtype H5N1. A nearly complete genome was generated for one sample, revealing a high similarity [>  99.5% (H5) nucleotide sequence identity] with Clade 2.3.4.4b H5N1 identified in Europe in 2022. Enterococcus moraviensis EMo 1-1Nik of horse origin:characteristics and potential bacteriocin-producing strain
AbstractNowadays, developed more precisious identification techniques have allowed to validate newer enterococcal species. Among them, the speciesEnterococcus moraviensis was also validated, at first from surface waters. However, in this study, characteristics and potential to bacteriocin production by the strainE. moraviensis EMo 1-1Nik isolated from buccal mucosa of Slovak warm-blood horse breed has been studied. BLASTn analysis allotted this strain to the speciesE. moraviensis with percentage identity BLASTn 16S rRNA sequence in the strain up to 100% (99.93% similarity withE. moraviensis NR113937.1). The strain EMo 1-1N...

Identification of the most effective serovars to be included in the MAT antigen panel to optimize the serodiagnosis of Leptospira infection in Northern Italy
AbstractThe microscopic agglutination test (MAT) assay is adopted as a world-wide reference test for the serodiagnosis of leptospirosis in humans and animals. One of the main limitations of MAT is the lack of sensitivity and serodiagnostic antigens should be periodically updated with locally circulating serovars in order to optimise its performance. The aim of this study was to determine the need to implement the antigen panel currently adopted in Northern Italy for the diagnosis ofLeptospira infection in dogs. For this purpose, a group of 288 dogs with and without clinical signs potentially consistent withLeptospira infec...

The dynamics of neutralizing antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 in cats naturally exposed to virus reveals an increase in antibody activity after re-infection
This study reports the detection and monitoring of the humoral response against SARS-CoV-2 including the detection of immunoglobulins G specific for receptor binding domain of SARS-CoV-2 spike protein by an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and neutralizing antibodies by virus neutralization assay. Results showed that these antibodies last longer than 16 months in two naturally apparently healthy infected cats with the absence of clinicopathological findings during the follow-up. Moreover, re-infection is also possible with an important increase in virus neutralization test titers in both animals with no evident systemic s...
