Factor V Leiden, prothrombin, MTHFR, and PAI-1 gene polymorphisms in patients with arterial disease: A comprehensive systematic-review and meta-analysis
The role of inherited thrombophilia in arterial disease is uncertain. We performed a systematic-review and meta-analysis of inherited thrombophilia in cerebrovascular (CVD), coronary heart (CHD), and peripheral artery disease (PAD) patients. (Source: Thrombosis Research)

ROS-driven structural and functional fibrinogen modifications are reverted by interleukin-6 inhibition in giant cell arteritis
Cranial and extra-cranial vascular events are among the major determinants of morbidity and mortality in Giant Cell Arteritis (GCA). Vascular events seem mostly of inflammatory nature, although the precise pathogenetic mechanisms are still unclear. We investigated the role of oxidation-induced structural and functional fibrinogen modifications in GCA. The effects of the anti-IL6R tocilizumab in counteracting these mechanisms were also assessed. Assessment of the individual determinants of two fibrinolysis assays, GFC and ECLT in platelet-depleted plasma and derived euglobulin fraction respectively
Fibrinolysis plays a critical role in maintaining the balance between clot formation and dissolution. Its regulation is complex and involves a delicate interplay between several factors, as summarized in Supplementary material Fig. S1. Several laboratory methods evaluate the fibrinolytic system, but no reference and standardised in vitro assay is currently available [1,2]. The absence of a fibrinolysis assay with suitable analytical performance is of clinical importance. Indeed, many patients with a convincing history of mild bleeding disorder (MBD) show no laboratory abnormality despite extensive and repeated laboratory w...

Prediction of in-hospital bleeding in acutely ill medical patients: External validation of the IMPROVE bleeding risk score
Pharmacological thromboprophylaxis slightly increases bleeding risk. The only risk assessment model to predict bleeding in medical inpatients, the IMPROVE bleeding risk score, has never been validated using prospectively collected outcome data. (Source: Thrombosis Research)

Natural Language Processing tool accurately identifies acute venous thromboembolism
As of 2016, 1,200,000 DVT (deep vein thrombosis) and PE (pulmonary embolism) were diagnosed in the United States annually (collectively called venous thromboembolism (VTE)) [1]. Once VTE is diagnosed, an International Classification of Disease (ICD) code will be assigned which allows billing of the patient visit and identification of diagnoses within the Electronic Health Record (EHR). Predictors of cancer in patients with acute pulmonary embolism
Acute pulmonary embolism (PE) can occur as a manifestation of an underlying cancer and be of paraneoplastic aetiology. A previously unknown cancer is sometimes diagnosed after the acute PE diagnosis. The identification of a group of patients with elevated probability of having an occult cancer underlying PE was never performed. We aimed to determine predictors of occult cancer in acute PE. Our hypothesis was that the D-dimer levels would be a predictor of cancer. (Source: Thrombosis Research)

Thrombus architecture is influenced by the antiplatelet loading treatment in patients with acute myocardial infarction
Intracoronary thrombus formation is a main cause of acute myocardial infarction triggered by platelet activation. However, there are no data on the impact of different treatment strategies with antiplatelet agents before percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) on histological characteristics of thrombus formation. Implications of bleeding on subsequent cardiovascular events in patients with atrial fibrillation after acute coronary syndrome or PCI
The association between bleeding and subsequent major adverse cardiac and cerebrovascular events (MACCE) remains poorly characterized. We aimed to evaluate the impact of hemorrhagic events in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) and acute coronary syndrome (ACS) or undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). External validation of AF-BLEED for predicting major bleeding and for tailoring NOAC dose in AF patients: A post hoc analysis in the ENGAGE AF-TIMI 48
AF-BLEED, a simple bleeding risk classifier, was found to predict major bleeding (MB) in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) and identify AF patients at high risk of MB who might potentially benefit from a lower direct oral anticoagulant dose. This post hoc study aimed to externally validate these findings in the ENGAGE AF-TIMI 48 (Effective aNticoaGulation with factor Xa next Generation in Atrial Fibrillation –Thrombolysis in Myocardial Infarction study 48) trial. D-dimer to fibrinogen ratio predicts early neurological deterioration in ischemic stroke with atrial fibrillation
The D-dimer to fibrinogen ratio (DFR) is a good indicator of clot-producing activity in thrombotic disease, but its clinical usefulness in stroke patients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF) has not been studied. We evaluated the association between the DFR and early neurological deterioration (END) in acute ischemic stroke (AIS) patients with NVAF. (Source: Thrombosis Research)

CT coronary calcium score is a prognostic marker in acute pulmonary embolism
Acute pulmonary embolism (APE) is a possible life-threatening cardiovascular disease with 30-day mortality rates ranging from 0.5  % to>20  % depending on clinical symptoms at presentation [1]. Computed tomography pulmonary angiography (CTPA) is the gold standard for diagnosis of acute PE with high sensitivity and specificity [2]. (Source: Thrombosis Research)
