Can Galectin-3 be a reliable predictive biomarker for post-COVID syndrome development?
Reliable biomarkers able to predict post-COVID syndrome development are still lacking. The aim of the study was to evaluate the relationship between Galectin-3 blood concentrations and the development of post-COVID syndrome. (Source: Respiratory Medicine)

Beyond Symptoms: Radiologic identification of asymptomatic Mycobacterium avium complex pulmonary infections
Although international nontuberculous mycobacterial pulmonary disease (NTM-PD) guidelines highlight symptom presence at diagnosis, the clinical characteristics of asymptomatic Mycobacterium avium complex pulmonary infection (MAC-PI) patients remain understudied. We clarified the clinical characteristics and course of asymptomatic MAC-PI patients. (Source: Respiratory Medicine)

Development and validation of a claims-based algorithm to identify moderate exacerbations in patients with asthma treated in the US
Definitions of moderate asthma exacerbation have been inconsistent, making their economic burden difficult to assess. An algorithm to accurately identify moderate exacerbations from claims data is needed. (Source: Respiratory Medicine)

The discrepancy in bronchodilator response between ATS/ERS 2021 and 1991 criteria
We read with great interest the article from Chaiwong et al. [1] published in the journal in which they compared ATS/ERS 1991 bronchodilation (BD) criteria defined as an absolute change of ≥12% and ≥200 ml in forced expiratory volume in the first second (FEV1) [2] with the new one, proposed in 2021 consisted on a relative percentual change of>10% in FEV1 or forced vital capacity (FVC) from the individual's predicted value measurement [3]. In their study, a total of 500 patients were evaluated, of whom more than half had a chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) diagnosis and about the other half had an asthma diag...

Determining if the prognostic nutritional index can predict outcomes in community acquired bacterial pneumonia
Prognostic nutritional index (PNI) is an independent risk factor for mortality in community acquired bacterial pneumonia (CABP) and is more predictive than the Neutrophil- Lymphocyte Ratio. PNI could be included as a prognostic indicator for the routine assessment of CABP. (Source: Respiratory Medicine)

Organ involvement in newly diagnosed sarcoidosis patients in the Netherlands: The first large European multicentre prospective study
Clinical presentation and prevalence of organ involvement is highly variable in sarcoidosis and depends on ethnic, genetic and geographical factors. These data are not extensively studied in a Dutch population. (Source: Respiratory Medicine)

Association of inadequate social support and clinical outcomes in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease – A cross-sectional study
In patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), loneliness and social isolation are associated with increased morbidity and decreased mobility, self-reliance, and health-related quality of life. Social support has been shown to improve these outcomes. (Source: Respiratory Medicine)

Swedish translation and psychometric testing of the self-conscious emotions in COPD questionnaire
Assessment of self-conscious emotions is important to develop tailored interventions for people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Previous instruments have largely been developed for mental health populations. The Self-Conscious Emotions in COPD Questionnaire was the first instrument to assess self-conscious emotions in people with COPD, but it was only available in English. The aim was to translate the Self-Conscious Emotions in COPD Questionnaire into Swedish and to evaluate its psychometric properties and internal structure in a Swedish context. A network meta-analysis of the association between patient traits and response to regular dosing with ICS plus short-acting β2-agonist reliever or ICS/formoterol reliever only in mild asthma
Mild asthma treatment recommendations include intermittent inhaled corticosteroid (ICS)/formoterol dosing or regular ICS dosing with short-acting β2-agonist reliever. Due to the heterogeneity of asthma, identification of traits associated with improved outcomes to specific treatments would be clinically beneficial. (Source: Respiratory Medicine)
