The discrepancy in bronchodilator response between ATS/ERS 2021 and 1991 criteria

We read with great interest the article from Chaiwong et al. [1] published in the journal in which they compared ATS/ERS 1991 bronchodilation (BD) criteria defined as an absolute change of ≥12% and ≥200 ml in forced expiratory volume in the first second (FEV1) [2] with the new one, proposed in 2021 consisted on a relative percentual change of>10% in FEV1 or forced vital capacity (FVC) from the individual's predicted value measurement [3]. In their study, a total of 500 patients were evaluated, of whom more than half had a chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) diagnosis and about the other half had an asthma diagnosis.
