Effect of dietary interventions on markers of type 2 inflammation in asthma: A systematic review
Type 2 (T2) inflammation is a key mechanism in the pathophysiology of asthma. Diet may have immunomodulatory effects, and a role for diet in T2 inflammation has been suggested in the literature. Indeed, diet and food allergies play a role in children with atopic asthma, but less is known about diet in relation to adult asthma, which is often non-atopic. (Source: Respiratory Medicine)

Trends and sex differences in atrial fibrillation among patients hospitalized due to asthma: Insights from a nationwide population-based discharge database in Spain, 2016 –2021
To analyze changes in the prevalence of atrial fibrillation (AF) in patients hospitalized due to asthma; to compare hospital outcomes in asthma patients with and without AF, assessing sex differences; to identify variables associated with the presence of AF; and to analyze the factors associated with in-hospital mortality (IHM) among asthma patients with AF. Butyrate supplementation reduces sarcopenia by repairing neuromuscular junction in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is associated with an intestinal leak and neuromuscular junction (NMJ) degradation, which contributes to physical compromise and accelerated age-related muscle loss, called sarcopenia. However, the relevant interventions partly remain ineffective. We investigated the effects of exogenous butyrate on sarcopenia and physical capacity with relevance to intestinal permeability and NMJ integrity in COPD patients. (Source: Respiratory Medicine)

Cough monitoring for pulmonary sarcoidosis
Pulmonary sarcoidosis is primarily an outpatient disease. Exacerbations of pulmonary sarcoidosis usually respond well to therapy and rarely require hospitalization. The outpatient management of pulmonary sarcoidosis involves ascertaining the patient's symptoms, performing a physical examination, and often obtaining additional clinical data such as pulmonary function tests or chest imaging studies. Based on such clinical information collected during the clinic visit, the clinician decides how to adjust pulmonary sarcoidosis therapy. (Source: Respiratory Medicine)

Potential systemic effects of acquired CFTR dysfunction in COPD
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is characterized by airflow limitation, respiratory symptoms, inflammation of the airways, and systemic manifestations of the disease. Genetic susceptibility and environmental factors are important in the development of the disease, particularly exposure to cigarette smoke which is the most notable risk factor. Mutations in the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) gene are the cause of cystic fibrosis (CF), which shares several pathophysiological pulmonary features with COPD, including airway obstruction, chronic airway inflammation and bacterial colonizati...

The association between blood eosinophils and clinical outcome of acute exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease: A systematic review and meta-analysis
Studies have shown an association between eosinophilia and clinical outcomes in acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (AECOPD). However, contradictory findings exist. Our study aims to systematically evaluate the association between elevated peripheral blood eosinophils and clinical outcome of patients with AECOPD. (Source: Respiratory Medicine)

Electronic cigarette use and respiratory symptoms in the French population-based Constances cohort
Knowledge about the consequences of electronic cigarette (EC) use on respiratory health is still limited. We aimed to assess whether EC use is associated with the occurrence of asthma symptoms and chronic bronchitis among the French adult population, with a specific focus on never combustible cigarettes (CC) smokers. We further investigated whether the association differed in men and women. (Source: Respiratory Medicine)

Gastroesophageal reflux and snoring are related to asthma and respiratory symptoms: Results from a Nordic longitudinal population survey
To study if individuals with nocturnal gastroesophageal reflux (nGER) and habitual snoring are more likely to develop asthma and respiratory symptoms (i.e. wheeze, cough, chest tightness, breathlessness) than those without these conditions, and if these associations are additive. Effects of cannabis smoking on the respiratory system: A state-of-the-art review
The diminished perception of the health risks associated with the consumption of cannabis (marijuana) lead to a progressive increase in its inhalational use in many countries. Cannabis can be smoked through the use of joints, spliffs and blunts, and it can be vaporised with the use of hookah or e-cigarettes. Delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is the main psychoactive component of cannabis smoke but contains numerous other substances. While the recreational use of cannabis smoking has been legalised in several countries, its health consequences have been underestimated and undervalued. (Source: Respiratory Medicine)
