Effects of Smoking Status on Remission and Metabolic and Cognitive Outcomes in Schizophrenia Patients Treated with Clozapine
Conclusions Smoking behavior among clozapine-treated schizophrenia patients might delineate a cohort with an earlier onset of the disease. Nevertheless, most findings comparing disease-specific and clinical outcomes among smokers and nonsmokers were negative. Further research is needed to identify strategies to overcome insufficient remission rates in this patient group. Patients ’ Perspectives on Psychiatric Pharmacogenetic Testing
This study sought to assess genotyped patients’ perspectives and experiences with psychiatric PGx testing. Methods Individual semi-structured interviews were conducted among patients with depression who had undergone psychiatric PGx testing. The audio-recorded interviews were transcribed and analyzed inductively and deductively for salient themes. Results Twenty patients (100% Caucasian, 60% female, mean age 39±18 years) were interviewed. The majority of the PGx tests were provider-initiated for patients who faile...

Importance, Errors, and Patterns of Quotations to Psychiatric Original Articles
Discussion Quotations are important for the message of the quoting paper. Therefore, quotation errors may be detrimental to scientific reasoning and may undermine public trust in medical science. The present investigation is a case study, and its results are exploratory. While it is plausible that the findings translate into other environments, independent replication is needed. Case of Severe Acute-on-Chronic Lithium Intoxication with 8.6 mmol/l and Prompt Hemodialysis
Pharmacopsychiatry DOI: 10.1055/a-1167-3267Lithium has been the gold standard in the long-term treatment of bipolar disorder for more than 40 years 1. Due to a narrow therapeutic index lithium intoxication still is a common but potentially avoidable clinical problem 2. The possibility of SILENT-syndrome (syndrome of irreversible lithium-effectuated neurotoxicity) illustrates that prevention and optimal treatment of lithium intoxication is vitally important 3. Potential Drug interactions with Drugs used for Bipolar Disorder: A Comparison of 6 Drug Interaction Database Programs
Conclusion There is poor agreement among drug interaction database programs for the category of potential DDI involving psychiatric drugs. Drug interaction database programs provide valuable information, but the lack of consistency should be recognized as a limitation. When assistance is needed, physicians should check more than 1 drug interaction database program. Safety and Tolerability of the Anxiolytic and Nootropic Drug Phenibut: A Systematic Review of Clinical Trials and Case Reports
Pharmacopsychiatry DOI: 10.1055/a-1151-5017Phenibut is a nootropic drug that exerts anxiolytic and antinociceptive effects by acting on the GABAB receptor and the α2-δ subunit of voltage-dependent calcium channels. An increased number of reports of dependence to and intoxication by phenibut purchased online on the one hand and the wide prescription of phenibut in Eastern Europe for more than half a century on the other hand have resulted in a number of controversies regarding its use. In this review, we have summarized currently available information from case reports of phenibut dependence and intoxication and safety da...

Synchronization of Fibroblasts Ex Vivo in Psychopharmacology
Pharmacopsychiatry DOI: 10.1055/a-1151-4947The central oscillator for the inner clock is the suprachiasmatic nuclei of the hypothalamus. Furthermore, many peripheral oscillators are present in tissues such as skin. Human derived fibroblasts provide an advantageous model to study circadian rhythmicity as well as the influence of pharmacological drugs on circadian gene expression. Importantly, the synchronization of the circadian system of fibroblasts can be done by different methods. The review presents an overview of the current knowledge of different synchronization methods mostly used in mice or rat fibroblasts. Furtherm...

Drug-Drug Interactions Between Lithium and Cardiovascular as Well as Anti-Inflammatory Drugs
Discussion Routine clinical practice needs to focus on drugs affecting renal blood flow and function, especially on NSAIDs as over-the-counter medication that may lead to an increase in lithium serum concentration. To prevent intoxications, clinicians should carefully monitor the comedications, and they should inform patients about possible intoxications due to NSAIDs. Paliperidone LAI and Aripiprazole LAI Plasma Level Monitoring in the Prophylaxis of Bipolar Disorder Type I with Manic Predominance
The objective of this study was the evaluation of utility of plasma level monitoring in the clinical stabilizing efficacy and tolerability of paliperidone palmitate (PP) vs. aripiprazole monohydrate (AM) in bipolar disorder I (BD I) with manic predominance. Methods Fifty-six outpatients of both sexes, age ranging from 18 to 65 years, affected by BD I with manic predominance, orally treated and stabilized after acute episode for at least 2 weeks with paliperidone or aripiprazole (n=31, paliperidone; n=25, aripiprazole) underwent a prospective observational study of switching to the corresponding long-acting injection (LAI) ...
