Transcutaneous Electrical Acupoint Stimulation Improves Postoperative Sleep Quality in Patients Undergoing Laparoscopic Gastrointestinal Tumor Surgery: A Prospective, Randomized Controlled Trial
ConclusionPerioperative TEAS improved postoperative sleep quality, reduced postoperative pain and alleviated postoperative adverse effects in patients undergoing laparoscopic gastrointestinal tumor surgery resection. This may be associated with activating Nrf2/ARE signal pathway and decreasing its inflammatory actions.Trial registrationChinese Clinical Trial Registry (http://www.chictr.org.cn/index.aspx), ChiCTR2100054971. COVID-19-Related Burning Eye Syndrome and Burning Mouth Syndrome: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis
ConclusionsBoth BES and BMS are neuropathic COVID-19 infection complications, still under-studied and under-investigated, despite the fact that both are prevalent. Both COVID-19-related BES and COVID-19-related BMS could potentially be initial long COVID syndrome manifestations, and further research should be carried out in this field. Remimazolam Compared to Propofol During Hysteroscopy: A Safety and Efficacy Analysis
ConclusionsRemimazolam avoids the injection pain produced by propofol sedation, has a better pre-sedation experience, had the advantage of stable hemodynamics after injection compared to propofol, and a lower respiratory depression rate in the study patients. (Source: Pain and Therapy)

Median Effective Dose of Remifentanil for the Prevention of Pain Caused by the Injection of Rocuronium: An Age-Stratified Study
ConclusionsProphylactic intravenous remifentanil can prevent rocuronium injection pain, and its ED50 decreases with age, with 1.266  μg/kg (18–44 years), 1.188 μg/kg (45–59 years), and 1.070 μg/kg LBW (60–80 years), respectively.Trial RegistrationClinicalTrials.gov: NCT05217238 (registration date 18 Dec 2021). Pain Management in the Post-COVID Era —An Update: A Narrative Review
AbstractAn extensive computer search (from January 2020 to January 2023) was conducted including literature from the PubMed, Scopus, MEDLINE, Web of Science, and EMBASE databases. According to preset criteria, a total of 58 articles were included in this review article. Generally, any patient who becomes infected with COVID-19 can develop post-COVID-19 conditions. The course of COVID-19 is divided into three main stages: acute COVID-19 (up to 4  weeks), post-acute COVID-19 (from 4 to 12 weeks), and post-COVID (from 12 weeks to 6 months). If a more protracted course of COVID (over 6 months) is demonstrated, the term ...

Prevalence and Burden of Migraine in Switzerland: Cross-Sectional Study in ten Specialised Headache Centres from the BECOME Study
ConclusionsMigraine-related quality of life, as well as work productivity are significantly affected in Swiss patients with migraine. Increasing migraine burden is associated with increasing migraine frequency and prior treatment failures. (Source: Pain and Therapy)

Evaluation of Pain and Use of Analgesics during Medical Termination of Pregnancy in Real-Life Settings
ConclusionsMost of the women received an APP, but not all used it. API and gestational age were not related to different risks of more pain following MToP, whereas history of at least one child showed a negative association. Higher doses of misoprostol were strongly associated with both pain and CAI. API was associated with a decreased risk of CAI. (Source: Pain and Therapy)

New Synthetic Opioids: Clinical Considerations and Dangers
AbstractSince the early 2010s, synthetic opioids have significantly contributed to overall opioid-related overdose mortalities. For point of reference, of the 68,630 opioid-related deaths recorded in 2020, 56,516 involved synthetic opioids. During much of this period, fentanyl has been the most commonly used synthetic opioid. This time when fentanyl was the most popular opioid has been called the “third wave” of the opioid crisis, partly because it led to a sharp rise in deaths from overdoses. Other synthetic opioids, such as carfentanil, protonitazene, and isotonitazene, have also become more widely diverted for nonme...

Reduced Pain and Improved Function Following Short-Term Use of Noninvasive BioWave High Frequency Peripheral Nerve Stimulation for Pain Management
ConclusionThis survey is amongst the largest population sizes every studied for noninvasive neuromodulation. Within just 2  weeks patients can see a reduction in overall pain and medication needs. Although survey studies have inherent limitations such as duration and compliance biases with such an overwhelming benefit in every category we believe that noninvasive neuromodulation therapy is a promising, safe, and cost-e ffective therapy. Future studies should focus on long-term follow-ups and post-therapy pain scores with a placebo group. (Source: Pain and Therapy)

ReActiv8 Stimulation Therapy vs. Optimal Medical Management: A Randomized Controlled Trial for the Treatment of Intractable Mechanical Chronic Low Back Pain (RESTORE Trial Protocol)
AbstractIntroductionChronic low back pain (CLBP) is the leading cause of years lived with disability globally. The role of restorative neurostimulation in the treatment of patients with refractory mechanical CLBP and multifidus muscle dysfunction has been established in one randomized controlled trial (RCT) and several clinical studies that demonstrated both safety and clinical benefit. This post-market trial provides a direct comparison to optimized medical management to test the hypothesis that the addition of restorative neurostimulation to current care paradigms results in significant improvements in back pain-related ...

Critical Appraisal of Current Acute LBP Management and the Role of a Multimodal Analgesia: A Narrative Review
AbstractAcute low back pain (LBP) stands as a leading cause of activity limitation and work absenteeism, and its associated healthcare expenditures are expected to become substantial when acute LBP develops into a chronic and even refractory condition. Therefore, early intervention is crucial to prevent progression to chronic pain, for which the management is particularly challenging and the most effective pharmacological therapy is still controversial. Current guideline treatment recommendations vary and are mostly driven by expertise with opinion differing across different interventions. Thus, it is difficult to formulat...
