Research Progress on Serratus Anterior Plane Block in Breast Surgery: A Narrative Review
AbstractBreast surgery, especially radical mastectomy, is often accompanied by moderate to severe acute pain, which significantly reduces postoperative quality of life. Effective pain management can accelerate patient recovery. Serratus anterior plane block (SAPB) is a new type of fascial plane block technique, which can better target the nerve network innervating the chest wall and breast and provide good analgesia in the anterolateral chest wall. Current clinical research evidence indicates that SAPB has significant benefits in breast surgery. Further research avenues for this technology include optimal local anesthetic ...

The Efficiency of Ultrasound-Guided Pericapsular Nerve Group Block for Pain Management after Hip Surgery: A Meta-analysis
ConclusionsOur research shows that PENG block can reduce the use of opioids after hip surgery and is effective in postoperative analgesia. Future research should explore the injection method, concentration, and dosage. (Source: Pain and Therapy)

The Effect of Smoking Cessation on Acute Pain: A Systematic Review
AbstractSmoking is a known risk factor for developing various pain-related disorders. However, acute pain often triggers the craving for cigarette consumption, resulting in a positive feedback mechanism. In addition, there is evidence of decreased pain tolerance during the early stages of abstinence. Therefore, in this study, we aimed to investigate whether a period of decreased pain tolerance and increased pain intensity occurs during smoking cessation. A systematic literature search was conducted through PubMed and Web of Science databases for controlled studies investigating the influence of smoking cessation on acute (...

Effect of Progressive Postural Control Exercise Versus Core Stability Exercise in Young Adults with Chronic Low Back Pain: A Randomized Controlled Trial
ConclusionIn the short term, PPCE provides positive effects similar to those of core stability exercise in patients with CLBP. The effective mechanism of PPCE might be the consequence of neuromuscular plasticity and adaptation adjustments. PPCE enriches the choices of treatment for CLBP.Clinical Trial RegistrationThe trial was registered atwww.chictr.org.cn, identifier ChiCTR2100043113. (Source: Pain and Therapy)

Risk Factors for Poor Pain Control in Zoster-Associated Pain: A Retrospective Study
ConclusionsThe risk of poor pain control in patients with ZAP increased as a result of certain patient characteristics and complications, especially severe pain before treatment and cancer. (Source: Pain and Therapy)

Computed Tomography-Guided Coeliac Plexus Neurolysis in Palliative in-Patients with Intra-Abdominal Malignancy: Retrospective Evaluation of Neurolytic Solution Spread as a Predictive Factor
ConclusionsBased on the spread of contrast medium clinicians can neither correctly anticipate the pain relief or post-procedural NRS, nor the duration of pain relief and complications. It is not essential to have the perfect sickle-shaped spread of the injectate for adequate pain control. (Source: Pain and Therapy)

Immunoglobulin Use for the Management of Painful Peripheral Neuropathy: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
ConclusionThe use of IG for the treatment of pain due to peripheral neuropathy has a potential therapeutic benefit. Further studies across patients with different types of painful peripheral neuropathy are needed to better characterize this effect.Registration number on PROSPERO: CRD42022319614. Analgesia Effect of Ultrasound-Guided Transversus Abdominis Plane Block Combined with Intravenous Analgesia After Cesarean Section: A Double-Blind Controlled Trial
ConclusionsPCIA with sufentanil alone or combined with TAPB can be safely and effectively used for postoperative analgesia after cesarean section. PCIA combined with TAPB had better analgesic effect and lower incidence of side effects while reducing the dose of opioids. The results of this study provide new ideas and insights for the choice of analgesia after cesarean section. (Source: Pain and Therapy)

Stigma and Chronic Pain
AbstractStigma is defined by the World Health Organization (WHO) as “a mark of shame, disgrace or disapproval that results in an individual being rejected, discriminated against and excluded from participating in a number of different areas of society”. Extensive literature searches have documented stigma in the context of health. Among the physical health condi tions that are associated with stigma, chronic pain deserves particular attention. Stigma experienced by individuals with chronic pain affects their entire life. Literature identifies multiple dimensions or types of stigma, including public stigma, structural s...

Comparison of Older and Younger Patients Referred to a Non-interventional Community Pain Clinic in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA)
ConclusionThe study points to considerable differences between younger and older patients with pain with the latter presenting with significant biomedical pathology but lesser psychopathology. The results are comparable to those obtained from a university pain clinic as well as a rural Northern Ontario clinic. Implications of the study for planning of pain care are discussed.
