Characteristics, Clinical Course, and Outcomes of Veterans Admitted With Covid-19 in Detroit, Michigan
Conclusions Detroit veterans were primarily older African American men with more comorbidities than inpatients previously described. Gastrointestinal symptoms were twice as common as fever. Three Properties of SARS-CoV-2 That Promote COVID-19
Much of COVID-19 disease can be attributed to the stable structure of the envelope, which facilitates its transmission; the spike protein and its receptor which determine which tissues get infected and are susceptible to viral and immune cytolysis; and evasion of initiation of type 1 and 3 interferons, which gives the virus a replicative head start and ability to spread while simultaneously compromising the antiviral immune response. Prosthetic Valve Endocarditis Diagnosed Because of Persistent Hemolytic Anemia After Salmonella Iliopsoas Abscess Treatment: A Case Report and Literature Review
We present a case of prosthetic mitral valve endocarditis diagnosed because of hemolytic anemia after treatment of iliopsoas abscess and bacteremia caused by Salmonella Enteritidis. We also present a review of nontyphoidal Salmonella endocarditis. Prosthetic valve endocarditis cases had similar prognosis to native valve endocarditis cases, but they required surgery frequently. In a case of Salmonella bacteremia with prosthetic valves, infective endocarditis should be ruled out. (Source: Infectious Diseases in Clinical Practice)
