Outcomes of COVID-19 Patients Hospitalized at Acute Care Services: Real-World Experience in the New York Metropolitan Area During the Early Pandemic Before Initiation of Clinical Trials
Background As New York became the epicenter of the COVID-19 pandemic early on, clinicians were challenged to provide optimal medical and pharmaceutical care, despite the paucity of supporting literature and guidance. We sought to describe prescribing patterns and outcomes of physician response to the urgent need to treat COVID-19 patients before initiation of randomized clinical trials. Methods This was a retrospective cohort study of adult patients with COVID-19 initially admitted to acute care services during March 2020. Critically ill patients requiring intensive care unit level of care on admission were excl...

Coronavirus Disease 2019 in Children: Is It Really Mild?
Coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic has spread rapidly to the world. The disease can vary from mild cases to severe respiratory distress; this may increase rapidly and overwhelm the pediatric intensive care units. Lately, there have been various reports about a de novo multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children or pediatric inflammatory multisystem syndrome temporally associated with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 infection. We classified the disease into 2 spectrums: the acute phase in severely ill patients and the postinflammatory phase. Neither of them could be classified as mild because there is enoug...

Infection Risk of COVID-19 in Dentistry Remains Unknown: A Preliminary Systematic Review
Conclusions Although it seems that there are almost no reported cases of infection by SARS-CoV-2 during dental treatments, occupational or nosocomial transmission could not be ruled out. Hence, further prospective assessment of COVID-19 transmission is urgently required, and careful and protective measurements are necessary to avoid infection during dental practice. Nontyphoidal Salmonella Osteomyelitis in an Immunocompetent Adult Without Preceding Symptoms
A 23-year-old man presented with a painful swelling of his left shin approximately 5 weeks after a very mild trauma. He had not experienced fever, abdominal pain, or diarrhea. Magnetic resonance images were compatible with chronic osteomyelitis. The cultures of the bone biopsy showed growth of Salmonella enterica serovar Enteritidis. Blood cultures remained sterile, there were no signs of a carrier state, and no immune deficiency could be found. After surgical debridement, the patient was treated with ceftriaxone and co-trimoxazole and later ciprofloxacin because of an allergic reaction. Nontyphoidal Salmonella osteomyelit...

Streptococcus pneumoniae Peritonitis and Enterocolitis in a Previously Healthy Female
We present a case of a previously healthy 40-year-old woman who presented with symptoms of gastroenteritis. Initial workup revealed multiple dilated, thick walled, and fluid-filled loops of small bowel and S. pneumoniae bacteremia. She rapidly developed multiloculated ascites, significant peritonitis, enterocolitis, and a pelvic abscess. Polymerase chain reaction of her pelvic abscess identified S. pneumoniae. The patient was treated with multiple paracenteses, abscess drain placement, and antibacterial therapy. This case is noteworthy given the rarity of S. pneumoniae peritonitis and the severity of the patient's presenta...
