Chromoblastomycosis: A Neglected Occupational Disease
Chromoblastomycosis (CBM) is a chronic progressive cutaneous fungal infection caused by several naturally pigmented fungi which are commonly seen in tropical and subtropical climates. The infection is secondary to trauma or autoinoculation. A majority of the cases from India are reported from the sub-Himalayan belt and South India. Fungal diseases other than mycetoma are considered neglected diseases by the World Health Organization. The global burden of CBM could be even greater than mycetoma and can lead to potential incapacity for labor. Here, we present a case of cutaneous CBM from Kerala, India. A 57-year-old male far...

Endosvascular Treatment of Mycotic Thoracic Aortic Pseudoaneurysm Secondary to Nontyphoidal Salmonella Infection: A Case Report
Treatment of patients with infected aortic aneurysm remains a challenge for the vascular surgeon and carries a high risk of mortality. Here, we present a case of a patient with infected thoracic aneurysm treated successfully with endovascular technique. The female patient, age 57 years, was admitted to the hospital due to severe thoracic pain. The angiotomography revealed inflammation of the thoracic aorta along with the presence of air bubbles. Stool and blood cultures were positive for Salmonella ser. Enteritidis. Targeted antibiotics were given intravenously for 22 days followed by oral delivery for 6 months. After 14 w...

Predominance of Infection With Blastocystis hominis in Patients With Colorectal Cancer and Its Association With High Mucin Content, Infiltration of Inflammatory Cells and Elevated Serum Tumor Necrosis Factor α
Background Blastocystis hominis is a unicellular protozoan parasite with a worldwide distribution. It was hypothesized that the infection with B. hominis plays a role in the pathogenesis of colorectal cancer in humans. Objective We aimed to test this hypothesis in a 1-year study using patients from Saudi Arabia with colorectal cancer. Subjects and Methods Colorectal cancer patients with various stages were enrolled in the study as cases (n = 75) along with a noncolorectal cancer patients as controls (n = 25). All participants in the study were subjected to history taking and investigated for B. hominis in...

Maternal and Microorganism Characteristics Cannot Predict Adverse Outcome in Pregnancies Complicated With Urinary Tract Infection
Background Previous studies revealed different results on the impact of urinary tract infection on pregnancy outcomes. Inconsistent data on adverse outcomes such as preterm delivery, low birth weight, and intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) are reported in several studies. Methods Microorganisms were classified into 4 groups; Enterobacteriaceae, gram-positive cocci, fungi and others. Adverse pregnancy outcome was defined in the presence of IUGR, preterm delivery, low birth weight, and low appearance, pulse, grimace, activity, and respiration score. Adverse and no adverse outcome groups were compared. Resul...

Assessment of Lockdown Effectiveness in the Wake of COVID-19 in India Using the Auto Regressive Integrated Moving Average Model
Conclusions In Gujarat and Delhi, the lockdown was not effective in controlling the rise in COVID-19 cases even after the 56th day of lockdown, whereas the Punjab state succeeded in preventing havoc of COVID-19. In lieu of lockdown, using facemasks and improving ventilation in closed workspace settings, crowded spaces, and close-contact settings are more pragmatic than keeping away from others in India. Cecropins Activity Against Bacterial Pathogens
This study aimed to evaluate the antibacterial activity of cecropins against bacterial pathogens quantitatively. In this study, articles reporting antimicrobial activity of cecropins were searched in PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus databases using the Google Scholar search engine. Then, the results of the current study were evaluated quantitatively. In this study, we found 29 studies reporting cecropins antimicrobial activity against major bacterial pathogens. Also, there were 25 studies on cecropin antimicrobial activity against gram-negative pathogens, and it was cleared that cecropin B antibacterial activity on Pseud...
