Breast Infections With Mycobacterium goodii After Reduction Mammaplasty: First Case and Literature Review
Mycobacterium goodii was identified in 1999 as a rapidly growing nontuberculous mycobacteria species related to the Mycobacterium smegmatis group isolated from human wound infections. Infection with this organism is exceptionally rare after breast surgery in the absence of a prosthetic implant. (Source: Infectious Diseases in Clinical Practice)

A case of COVID-19 Reinfection and Systematic Review of Patterns of Reinfection
We present a case of a middle age Hispanic patient with COVID-19 reinfection. We conducted a systematic review of the literature of reinfection cases and found that women represent the majority of the cases and that reinfection usually presents with more severe disease, particularly among healthcare workers. Atypical Pylephlebitis: A Case Series From a Comprehensive Cancer Center
Pylephlebitis is also called suppurative thrombophlebitis of the portal venous mesenteric system. It is often seen as a complication of intra-abdominal infection, mainly diverticulitis and appendicitis. It is a rare disease with high mortality. Because of its nonspecific presentation, diagnosis is usually missed. So, it is important to consider pylephlebitis as one of the differential diagnoses if the patient presents with signs of abdominal sepsis. Pylephlebitis usually begins with thrombophlebitis of small veins draining an area of intra-abdominal infection and extends into larger veins that cause septic thrombophlebitis...

Recovery From COVID-19 Pneumonia in a Heart Transplant Recipient: A Case Report
Solid-organ transplant patients have a high risk of severe infection related to acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-Cov-2). This case represents a 54-year-old woman known as a diabetic, hypothyroidism, and a recent heart transplant recipient who presented with a 1-week history of cough and fatigue. She was hypoxic on presentation to the hospital and progressively declined and required invasive mechanical ventilation. She had respiratory distress and hypoxia and chest x-ray showed progressive bilateral chest infiltrates. She had leukopenia of 3.5 cells *109/L and lymphopenia of 0.2 cells *109/L. The inflammatory ...

Rapid Detection of Urinary Ureaplasma urealyticum and Mycoplasma hominis Isolated from Pregnant Women and Their Antibiotic Susceptibility Profile
Conclusions There was a good agreement between the MSP kit and the multiplex PCR. The MSP kit was an easy and rapid alternative to the complicated conventional culture method for the detection of urinary mycoplasmas. Doxycycline and minocycline had the highest sensitivity rates; however, clindamycin would be the first choice for empirical treatment of pregnant women. Comparing Serum Levels of Vitamin D and Zinc in Novel Coronavirus–Infected Patients and Healthy Individuals in Northeastern Iran, 2020
Conclusions Results showed that severe cases had lower levels of Vit D than did other groups and were marginally significant. Also, severe cases had a significantly low level of zinc when compared with nonsevere cases and HVs. Levels of Vit D and zinc can affect the incidence of COVID-19 infection. Comorbid Communicable Diseases of Substance Abuse in Thailand: A 5-Year Retrospective Study
Substance abuse is a major threat to health and safety of not only drug users themselves but also communities more widely because of the increased risk of spreading communicable diseases that coexist with drug misuse. Retrospective data from 2013 to 2017 drawn from a Thai rehabilitation center showed 14 cases of hepatitis, 36 of HIV, and 102 of tuberculosis (TB). Demographic data and International Classification of Disease, Tenth Revision, codes related to comorbidity of these communicable diseases were obtained. Most hepatitis comorbidity was found in patients with alcohol dependence who were infected with hepatitis B or ...

Non-Respiratory Droplet Transmission of COVID-19 in the Isolation Ward of a Secondary Hospital in Oman: A Return to Isolation Basics
Conclusion Despite preparedness to combat pandemics, the infection control precautions taken at this facility were found not sufficient to prevent nosocomial spread of COVID-19. Issues were identified with compliance, enforcement, and failure to update to the most current guidance. Urgent review of ongoing hygiene and isolation practices in hospitals of this type is indicated. Further studies are required to better understand the role of fecal oral transmission and environmental contamination in the transmission of COVID-19. Front-line health care workers are among the most vulnerable groups at risk for acquiring CO...

High Viral Load in Upper Respiratory Specimens of Persons With SARS-CoV-2 Infection in a Northern Italian Area
Conclusions In this Italian area, more COVID-19 patients had high viral load in the spring epidemic wave than at the beginning of the second, during the summer. Cycle threshold values may represent useful information to monitor viral load at a population level in subjects with SARS-CoV-2 infection. (Source: Infectious Diseases in Clinical Practice)
