Double Diabetes: A Growing Problem Requiring Solutions
Exp Clin Endocrinol Diabetes DOI: 10.1055/a-1392-0590The growing proportion of type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) patients with clinical features of insulin resistance (IR) has led to the description of a distinctive T1DM subgroup, still unrecognised by current guidelines, called double diabetes, assumingly associated with poorer metabolic phenotype and increased risk of micro- and macrovascular complications. The main goal of identifying double diabetes, estimated to be present in up to half of T1DM patients, is timely implementation of appropriate therapeutic interventions to reduce the increased risk of chronic complicatio...

Impact of Smoking, Obesity and Maternal Diabetes on SHBG Levels in Newborns
Conclusions: SHBG levels are lower in newborns born to mothers with diabetes than without diabetes, and may be a marker for babies’ life-long risk for abnormal metabolic health. On the other hand, the adverse effects of tobacco smoke on the fetus do not appear to directly influence SHBG levels. Impact of Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease on Metabolic Comorbidities in Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus
Conclusion The coded prevalence of NAFLD in T2D patients is low, which is in contrast to published series. Enhancing disease awareness of NAFLD and screening recommendations in high risk populations will be beneficial for the active management of these patients. Reduced Thalamic Volume and Metabolites in Type 1 Diabetes with Polyneuropathy
Conclusions In this cohort with type 1 diabetes and severe DSPN, thalamic atrophy was present and associated with reduced NAA/cre, indicating thalamic structural loss and dysfunction. Thalamic atrophy was associated to reduced sensory function involving large fiber neuropathy and sensation to tetanic stimulation that may reflect synaptic transmission. This may ultimately contribute to the current understanding of the pathophysiology behind the perception changes evident in DSPN. Comparison of Safety Profiles of the New and Old Formulations of Levothyroxine in a First Global Introduction in France
Conclusions The new formulation safety profile aligns with the established profile of the old formulation of levothyroxine. The benefit–risk profile is unchanged, such that the benefits of using the new formulation in the approved indications outweigh the risks associated with the treatment. Choice of Continuous Glucose Monitoring Systems May Affect Metrics: Clinically Relevant Differences in Times in Ranges
Discussion The differences in metrics found between the two continuous glucose monitoring systems may result in different therapy recommendations. In order to make adequate clinical decisions, measurement performance of CGM systems should be standardized and all available information, including the HbA1c, should be utilized. Functional Hypogonadism and Testosterone Deficiency in Aging Males With and Without HIV-infection
This study aimed at comparing the prevalence of testosterone deficiency and functional hypogonadism in men ≥ 50 years in these three groups. Patients and Methods Multi-center, cross-sectional substudy of the German-wide 50/2010 study, including men aged 50 years or older with HIV-infection, type 2 diabetes, and controls. Results Altogether, 322 men were included (mean age: 62 years (SD±7.9)). The prevalence of testosterone deficiency in men living with HIV, type 2 diabetes, and controls was 34.5, 44.9, and 35.0%, respectively; the prevalence of functional hypogonadism was 7.7, 14.3 and 3.5%, respectively. Single-factor ...

Role of the Specialized Pro-resolving Mediator Resolvin D1 in Hashimoto ʼs Thyroiditis

Outcomes of Transsphenoidal Microsurgery for Prolactinomas – A Contemporary Series of 162 Cases
Conclusion Transsphenoidal microsurgery is safe and efficient for treatment of prolactinomas. It is particularly suitable for enclosed prolactinomas. The patient should be well informed of the pros and cons of the treatment options, which include DA medication and TSS, and the patient’s preference should be taken into account during decision-making. β1-adrenergic and Muscarinic Acetylcholine Type 2 Receptor Antibodies are Increased in Graves’ Hyperthyroidism and Decrease During Antithyroid Therapy
Conclusion Autoantibodies against the β1-adrenergic and the muscarinic acetylcholine type 2 receptors were increased in Graves’ patients, decreased with treatment, but did not correlate with cardiac function. However, an autoimmune effect on the heart cannot be excluded in subpopulations, as the functional properties of the analyzed antibodies remain to be determined.
