Clinical predictors of right ventricular dysfunction and association with adverse outcomes in peripartum cardiomyopathy
ConclusionsAfrican descent and family history of cardiomyopathy were significant predictors of RV dysfunction. RV dysfunction and elevated PASP were significantly associated with a composite of major adverse cardiac events. This at-risk group may prompt closer monitoring or early referral for advanced therapies. (Source: ESC Heart Failure)

Acyl ghrelin increases cardiac output while preserving right ventricular ‐pulmonary arterial coupling in heart failure
ConclusionTreatment with acyl ghrelin increases CO while preserving or even improving RVPAC in HFrEF, possibly due to increased contractility, reduced PVR and/or reduced left sided filling pressures. These potential effects strengthen the role of acyl ghrelin therapy in HFrEF with right ventricular failure. (Source: ESC Heart Failure)

Association between white blood cell ‐to‐haemoglobin ratio and 30 day mortality in heart failure in intensive care unit
ConclusionsWHR was positively associated with and performed well to predict 30  day mortality, indicating that WHR may be a reliable index to assess the prognosis of HF patients admitted to the ICU. (Source: ESC Heart Failure)

Meta ‐Analysis Global Group in Chronic Heart Failure score for the prediction of mortality in valvular heart disease
ConclusionsThe MAGGIC score is a reliable prognostic factor across the range of cardiac dysfunction in VHD and may assist in risk stratification and guide clinical decision-making. (Source: ESC Heart Failure)

The efficacy and safety of new potassium binders on renin –angiotensin–aldosterone system inhibitor optimization in heart failure patients: a systematic review and meta‐analysis
AbstractGuideline-directed medical therapy (GDMT) has improved outcomes in patients with heart failure, including the use of renin –angiotensin–aldosterone system inhibitors, which can hinder the excretion of potassium, resulting in hyperkalaemia. New potassium binders (NPBs) can prevent this adverse effect; however, the efficacy and safety of NPB for this indication have not been fully established. We conducted a systemati c review and meta-analysis synthesizing randomized controlled trials (RCTs), which were retrieved by systematically searching PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, and Cochrane through 26 April 2023. The ...

Differential effect of left ventricular unloading according to the aetiology of cardiogenic shock
ConclusionsLV unloading with VA-ECMO may reduce 90-day mortality compared with VA-ECMO alone in patients with non-AMI-induced CS, but not in AMI-induced CS. (Source: ESC Heart Failure)

Cardiological parameters predict mortality and cardiotoxicity in oncological patients
ConclusionsIn cancer patients, CVRF accumulation predicts cardiotoxicity whereas elevated hs-cTnT or NT-proBNP levels are associated with ACM. Accordingly, less intensive surveillance protocols may be warranted in patients with low cardiac biomarker levels and absence of CVRFs. (Source: ESC Heart Failure)

Use of invasive cardiopulmonary exercise testing to diagnose preload reserve failure in patients with liver disease
AbstractIn this case series, we describe the use of invasive cardiopulmonary exercise testing (iCPET) to diagnose heart failure due to preload reserve failure in two patients with progressive dyspnoea. We demonstrate that underlying liver disease contributes to preload reserve failure as a cause of exertional dysfunction. In liver diseases such as non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), fibrotic changes to the sinusoidal liver architecture occur leading to an increased transhepatic sinusoidal pressure gradient. Even at the earliest stage of hepatic fibrosis in patients with NAFLD, changes in hepatic blood flow are seen ...

Sodium ‐glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors are associated with reduced risk of mortality and readmissions in heart failure
ConclusionsThis nationwide real-world study indicates that patients with HF, in which majority coexisted with diabetes mellitus, who received SGLT2i were statistically significantly associated with lower risk for all-cause mortality, cardiovascular mortality, cardiovascular mortality or HF readmissions, and all-cause readmissions, in line with the randomized trials assessing SGLT2i. Heart failure ‘the cancer of the heart’: the prognostic role of the HLM score
ConclusionsThe HLM score has a greater prognostic power compared with the NYHA classification, ACC/AHA stages, and LVEF assessed by transthoracic echocardiography in terms of the composite endpoint of all-cause death and rehospitalization due to HF at 12  months of follow-up. Association of mild kidney dysfunction with diastolic dysfunction and heart failure with preserved ejection fraction
ConclusionsBoth mild and moderate kidney dysfunction are independently associated with left ventricular diastolic dysfunction parameters and HFpEF. This association is independent of sex and strongest for moderate kidney dysfunction. Considering mild-to-moderate kidney dysfunction as risk factor for HFpEF may help identify high-risk groups benefiting most from early intervention. (Source: ESC Heart Failure)
