Pharmacological Options in Atherosclerosis: A Review of the Existing Evidence
AbstractCoronary heart disease (CHD) is the leading cause of mortality worldwide and high low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol levels have been shown to be key in the pathogenesis of this condition. Lipid control has therefore been the subject of decades of research and has led to many large and robust randomized controlled trials, as well as the highest grossing drug of all time —Lipitor (atorvastatin). Statin therapy has long been indicated for secondary and more recently primary prevention. However, despite the large-scale use of statins, CHD prevalence remains high, and some patients do not respond to statin the...

Drug-Coated Balloon-Only Percutaneous Coronary Intervention for the Treatment of De Novo Coronary Artery Disease: A Systematic Review
In this study, we performed a systematic review of stentless DCB-only angioplasty in de novo coronary artery disease. We identified 41 studies examining the effects of DCB-only PCI in a variety of clinical scenarios including small vessels, bifurcations, calcified lesions, and primary PCI. DCB-only PCI appears to be associated with comparable clinical outcomes to DESs and superior angiographic outcomes to plain-old balloon angioplasty. Although current data are promising, there is still a need for further long-term randomized control trial data comparing a DCB-only approach specifically against a second- or third-generatio...

27-Year-Old Man with a Positive Troponin: A Case Report
AbstractIn this case report, we describe a young athletic male with a family history of early sudden cardiac death who presented with atypical chest pain and was found to have a positive serum troponin. Although his symptoms resolved without intervention, workup revealed hypertension, hyperlipidemia, mild left ventricular hypertrophy, non-obstructive coronary artery disease, and the presence of serum heterophile antibodies. Ultimately, it was concluded that his rigorous exercise regimen as well as the presence of heterophile antibodies may have contributed to his positive serum troponin. This case serves as a reminder of t...

Effects of Neostigmine and Sugammadex for Reversal of Neuromuscular Blockade on QT Dispersion Under Propofol Anesthesia: A Randomized Controlled Trial
ConclusionIn the present study, a mixture of neostigmine and atropine, but not sugammadex, increased QTc and QTcD under propofol anesthesia. Thus, neostigmine may cause electrocardiogram abnormalities that could precede the development of fatal arrhythmias. (Source: Cardiology and Therapy)

Risk of Hospitalization for Cardiovascular Events with β-Blockers in Hypertensive Patients: A Retrospective Cohort Study
ConclusionsNebivolol was associated with significantly lower risk of hospitalization due to composite cardiovascular events than atenolol or metoprolol in this large retrospective cohort study of monotherapy with three different β1-selective blockers in hypertensive patients.FundingAllergan plc, Madison, NJ, USA. Clopidogrel Versus Newer P2Y12 Antagonists for Percutaneous Coronary Intervention in Patients with Out-of-Hospital Cardiac Arrest Managed with Therapeutic Hypothermia: A Meta-Analysis
ConclusionsThis meta-analysis showed no difference between clopidogrel and newer antiplatelet agents in the incidence of stent thrombosis or in-hospital mortality for PCI in cases of TH. Further randomized studies are needed to explore the optimal dual antiplatelet treatment in TH. (Source: Cardiology and Therapy)

Trend and Outcomes of Direct Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement from a Single-Center Experience
ConclusionsDirect TAVR appears to be safe and is not associated with periprocedural MI or 1-year mortality. With current generation devices, this strategy can be considered for most patients undergoing TAVR. (Source: Cardiology and Therapy)
