Novel ACTL7A variants in males lead to fertilization failure and male infertility
ConclusionACTL7A variants affected the expression and localization of actin-like protein 7A in the affected spermatozoa and subsequently decreased the expression of phospholipase C zeta 1, which caused fertilization failure and male infertility. (Source: Andrology)

Is SARS ‐CoV‐2‐induced disease a decisive factor influencing testosterone in males? Findings from a case‐control ex post facto study
ConclusionsThis case-control ex post facto study showed lower tT levels in men with COVID-19 compared to those without COVID-19 despite both groups have been equally admitted to ICU for severe ARDS, thus suggesting a possible direct impact of SARS-CoV-2 infection toward circulating tT levels and a consequent more severe clinical outcome. Addendum to: The relationship between sperm nuclear DNA fragmentation, mitochondrial DNA fragmentation and copy number in normal and abnormal human ejaculates
ConclusionmtDNA fragmentation and loss occur post ejaculation. Their dynamics are likely to be associated with different and/or uncoupled mechanisms to that which cause nuclear DNA fragmentation. Our results indicate that while mtDNA fragmentation is not influenced by the sperm quality, the number of copies of sperm mtDNAcn can potentially serve as a risk factor for predicting non-normozoospermia. Sleep duration and biomarkers of fecundity in young men: a cross ‐sectional study from a population‐based cohort
ConclusionSleep duration was associated with some biomarkers of fecundity in young men. Maintaining a recommended sleep duration may thus be beneficial for young men with regard to reproductive health. (Source: Andrology)

Alterations in testicular positioning after normal descent: acquired cryptorchidism
Discussion and conclusionAcquired cryptorchidism accounts for more than half of cryptorchidism cases requiring surgery in our setting, with a clearly different age of presentation than that for congenital cryptorchidism. Therefore, it is necessary to monitor the presence of the testes in the scrotal sac until adolescence. It is also important to monitor patients with a history of cryptorchidism, not only for the management of the operated testicle but also for the early identification of patients who will develop metachronous contralateral cryptorchidism. Host defense amyloids: Biosensors of the immune system?
AbstractThere is considerable evidence showing that highly ordered aggregate structures known as amyloids carry out essential biological roles in species ranging from bacteria to humans. Indeed, many antimicrobial peptides/proteins form amyloids to carry out their host defense functions and many amyloids are antimicrobial. The similarity of host defense amyloids from bacterial biofilms to the mammalian epididymal amyloid matrix implies highly conserved host defense structures/functions. With an emphasis on the epididymal amyloid matrix, here we review the common properties of host defense amyloids including unique traits t...

Paternal preconception exposure to non ‐steroid anti‐inflammatory drugs or opioids and adverse birth outcomes: A nationwide registry‐based cohort study
ConclusionsOverall, we found null-associations across the comparisons made. Weak associations were found for paternal exposure to non-steroid anti-inflammatory drugs or opioids and preterm birth and small for gestational age, but not with low Apgar score or major congenital malformation. All associations were attenuated when compared against an active comparator of paternal paracetamol exposure. The effect sizes were small and less likely to be of clinical relevance. Is testosterone deficiency a predictive factor for recurrence of urethral stricture?
ConclusionTestosterone levels and ratios may serve as predictive factors for identifying recurrent cases in primary short-segment bulbar strictures. For patients at a higher risk of recurrence, urethroplasty may be considered as an initial treatment option, even in cases of primary and short-segment strictures. (Source: Andrology)

Decreased grey matter volume in dorsolateral prefrontal cortex and thalamus accompanied by compensatory increases in middle cingulate gyrus of premature ejaculation patients
ConclusionDisturbances in GMV were revealed in the prefrontal –cingulate–thalamic areas of PE patients. The findings implied that decreased GMV in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex and thalamus might be associated with the central pathological neural mechanism underlying the declined ejaculatory control while increased GMV in the middle cingulate gyrus mi ght be the compensatory mechanism underlying PE. Testicular function after non ‐cytotoxic and immunotherapy drug treatment
ConclusionWithin limits of the present study of sample size and duration of on-non-cytotoxic and immunotherapy treatment, non-cytotoxic and immunotherapy drugs have a modest effects on testicular exocrine function (sperm production) or its hormonal correlates (follicle-stimulating hormone, inhibin B), with minimal impact on testicular endocrine (testosterone, luteinizing hormone) function. Paternal pre ‐conceptional smoking and semen quality in the adult son
ConclusionWe found no support for an independent association between paternal pre-conceptional smoking and semen quality in young adult sons, but studies with more detailed paternal smoking history are needed before firm conclusions can be drawn. (Source: Andrology)

Male obesity: Associated effects on fertility and the outcomes of offspring
Obesity rates are increasing globally, making it imperative to comprehend the effects of parental obesity on human reproduction. This review aims to highlight the impact of male obesity on reproductive and offspring outcomes. Male obesity has been shown to affect fertility through various mechanisms, including changes in semen quality, difficulty with natural conception, and worsened assisted reproductive technology outcomes. The evidence regarding the impact of male obesity on success of sperm retrieval is conflicting, but all aforementioned adverse effects may be modifiable with weight loss. Moreover, paternal obesity ma...

Mammalian cysteine ‐rich secretory proteins interact with plasma membrane Ca2+ exporter PMCA4b
ConclusionOur study identifies PMCA4b as a target of multiple mammalian CRISPs and unravels a new role of CRISPs in regulating calcium homeostasis. Differences in the interaction of different CRISPs with cholesterol may regulate their enrichment in the lipid rafts and redistribution in the membrane post-capacitation, thereby affecting their interaction with PMCA4b. Recurrent pregnancy loss: a male crucial factor —A systematic review and meta‐analysis
ConclusionIn conclusion, current review and meta-analysis findings suggested that SDF and some specific semen parameters were associated with RPL in a multi-ethnic evaluation. This effort opens future direction on a growing awareness of, first, how the male factor plays a key role and, second, how appropriate would be to establish a direct dialogue between the gynecologist and the urologist.Patient summaryWe performed a systematic review and meta-analysis on the male component of RPL. We found that sperm DNA fragmentation and some specific sperm parameters are significantly associated with RPL. (Source: Andrology)
