Improving standard practices in studies using results from basic human semen examination
AbstractThe purpose of this article is to provide an explanation of the background behind a checklist that declares the laboratory methods used in a scientific study. It focuses primarily on implementing laboratory procedures to yield reliable results in basic semen examinations. While the World Health Organization (WHO) and international standards provide recommendations for basic semen examination, manuscripts submitted to Andrology frequently lack transparency regarding the specific techniques used. In addition, the terminology used for semen examination results often fails to provide a clear definition of the groups un...

Practice and development of male contraception: European Academy of Andrology and American Society of Andrology guidelines
ConclusionAs gender roles transform and gender equity is established in relationships, the male contribution to family planning must be facilitated. Efficient and safe male-directed methods must be evaluated and introduced into clinical practice, preferably reversible, either hormonal or non-hormonal. From a future perspective, identifying new hormonal combinations, suitable testicular targets, and emerging vas occlusion methods will produce novel molecules and products for male contraception. Genetically proxied intestinal microbiota and risk of erectile dysfunction
ConclusionsThis study provided novel evidence that genetically proxiedLachnospiraceae, Lachnospiraceae NC2004 group, Oscillibacter, Senegalimassilia, Tyzzerella-3, andRuminococcaceae UCG013 had potentially causal effects on ED. Further studies are needed to clarify the biological mechanisms linking intestinal microbiota to ED. (Source: Andrology)

A real ‐world pharmacovigilance study of FDA adverse event reporting system events for sildenafil
ConclusionsThese findings emphasize the importance of monitoring and understanding the potential risks associated with sildenafil. Further investigation is warranted to validate these associations and address previously unrecognized safety concerns. (Source: Andrology)

Parenting desire among men who have sex with men in a heteronormative context
ConclusionCurrent preliminary findings highlight that more than one in two men who have sex with men has a desire for fatherhood, with almost 81% of all having a high desire for fathering, which is clearly more intense in younger men. (Source: Andrology)

The chronic alcohol consumption influences the gonadal axis in men: Results from a meta ‐analysis
ConclusionThis study suggests how chronic alcohol consumption may inhibit the gonadal axis in healthy men, although the exact pathophysiological mechanisms connecting alcohol exposure and steroidogenesis are still not completely clarified. (Source: Andrology)

Complications after surgical correction of penile fractures —Is there a clinical impact?
Discussion and conclusionDistal fractures could be linked to erectile dysfunction and glans hypoesthesia. Surgical correction of penile fractures shows positive functional and self-reported outcomes, and the potential andrological complications rarely necessitate specific treatment. (Source: Andrology)

Prevalence, lifestyle, and risk factors of erectile dysfunction, premature ejaculation, and low libido in middle ‐aged men: first results of the Bavarian Men's Health‐Study
This study included a population-based random sample of 2500 50-year-old men who completed validated questionnaires, including the International Index of Erectile Function, the Erection Hardness Score, the Sexual Complaints Screener, and further questionnaires. Multiple logistic regression of outcomes ED, PE, and LL was used to model the association with explanatory factors.ResultsThe prevalence of at least one sexual dysfunction was 30%. 21%, 5.2%, and 7.2% of men had ED, PE, and LL, respectively. The risk of ED increased with PE (odds ratio [OR]: 1.94, 95% confidence interval [95%CI]: 1.22 –3.08), LL (OR: 2.04, 95%CI: ...

Role of serotonin, estrogen, and TNF ‐α in the paroxetine‐impaired steroidogenesis and testicular macrophages polarization
ConclusionsParoxetine serotonergic effect impairs LC steroidogenesis, via aromatization, increasing estrogen/testosterone ratio, which in turn upregulate NDRG2, promoting apoptosis, and impairing sperm production. Serotonin –estrogen pathways may be responsible for M2/M1 polarization,Tnfa upregulation, and induction of oxidative stress. The unrecovered testicular changes after treatment discontinuation are due to persistent paroxetine serotonin/estrogen effects. (Source: Andrology)

EAA/EMQN best practice guidelines for molecular diagnosis of Y ‐chromosomal microdeletions: State of the art 2023
AbstractTesting for AZoospermia Factor (AZF) deletions of the Y chromosome is a key component of the diagnostic workup of azoospermic and severely oligozoospermic men. This revision of the 2013 European Academy of Andrology (EAA) and EMQN CIC (previously known as the European Molecular Genetics Quality Network) laboratory guidelines summarizes recent clinically relevant advances and provides an update on the results of the external quality assessment program jointly offered by both organizations. A basic multiplex PCR reaction followed by a deletion extension analysis remains the gold-standard methodology to detect and cor...
