Exploring definitions of retention in care for people living with HIV in the United States in the modern treatment era
Discussion: Missed and kept-visit definitions of retention capture different constructs. Missed-visit measures are more strongly associated with poor HIV outcomes. (Source: AIDS)

Abnormal cognitive aging in people with HIV: evidence from data integration between two countries’ cohort studies
Objectives: Previous research has shown inconsistent results on whether cognitive aging is abnormal in people with HIV (PWH) because of low sample size, cross-sectional design, and nonstandard neuropsychological methods. To address these issues, we integrated data from two longitudinal studies: Australian HIV and Brain Ageing Research Program (N = 102) and CNS HIV Antiretroviral Therapy Effects Research (CHARTER) study (N = 924) and determined the effect of abnormal aging on neurocognitive impairment (NCI) among PWH. Methods: Both studies used the same neuropsychological test battery. NCI was defined bas...

How informal healthcare providers improve uptake of HIV testing: qualitative results from a randomized controlled trial
Conclusion: Traditional healer-delivered HIV testing was considered more confidential and easily accessible compared with clinic-based testing. Offering services through traditional healers may improve uptake of HIV testing services in rural, medically pluralistic communities. (Source: AIDS)

Intimate partner violence and oral HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis adherence among young African women
Conclusion: IPV events may either impede or motivate PrEP adherence among African AGYW, with age appearing to be an important consideration for IPV-related adherence interventions. (Source: AIDS)

Estimation of HIV incidence from analysis of HIV prevalence patterns among female sex workers in Zimbabwe
Conclusions: Our analysis is consistent with very high HIV incidence among FSW in Zimbabwe, especially among those who are young and recently started selling sex. There is a critical need to engage young entrants into sex work in interventions that reduce their HIV risk. (Source: AIDS)

Durability of tetanus seroprotection in people living with HIV
Conclusion: PWH born outside Europe have lower half-life of tetanus toxoid specific antibody as compared to previous study performed in the general population. Possible causes include lower nadir or current CD4+ T cell count or under-immunization status in country of origin before migration. Longer interval of booster vaccination, as recommended in the general population, might not be appropriate in this subgroup of PWH. Copyright © 2022 Wolters Kluwer Health, Inc. All rights reserved. Incidence and risk factors for recurrent sexually transmitted infections among MSM on HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis
Objective: High rates of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) have been reported among pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) users. We wished to assess the incidence and risk factors for recurrent STIs. Design: The ANRS IPERGAY trial was a prospective study investigating PrEP among MSM and transgender women in outpatient clinics in France and Canada. In all, 429 participants were enrolled, offered up to 4 years of PrEP and screened for bacterial STIs (syphilis, chlamydia and gonorrhea) at baseline and every 6 months. Methods: STIs incidence was calculated yearly. Cox proportional hazards model regression was ...

Evolving patterns of antiretroviral drug interactions in people with HIV in British Columbia, Canada
Objectives: To characterize the annual prevalence of antiretroviral/nonantiretroviral drug interactions in relation to antiretroviral therapy (ART)-prescribing patterns, and to describe drug interaction-related ART changes. Design/methods: This cohort study included ART-treated adults in British Columbia, Canada between 01 January 2010 and 31 December 2016. Medication dispensing records were abstracted from a population-based, linked administrative-health dataset and used to identify antiretroviral-comedication drug interactions (’caution’/’avoid’ drug interactions in HIV-focused drug interaction checker...

Racial and ethnic disparities in coronavirus disease 2019 disease incidence independent of comorbidities, among people with HIV in the United States
Conclusion: Our results suggest that the presence of structural racial inequities above and beyond medical comorbidities increased the risk of COVID-19 among PWH. PWH with immune exhaustion as evidenced by lowest historical CD4+ cell count or current low CD4+ : CD8+ ratio had greater risk of COVID-19. (Source: AIDS)
