Assessment of coronary inflammation in antiretroviral treated people with HIV infection and active HIV/hepatitis C virus co-infection
Objective: People with HIV (PWH) and co-infected with hepatitis C virus (PWH + HCV) have increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Peri-coronary inflammation, measured by fat attenuation index (FAI) on coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA), independently predicts cardiovascular risk in the general population but has not been studied in the PWH + HCV population. We tested whether peri-coronary inflammation is increased in PWH or PWH + HCV, and whether inflammation changes over time. Design: Cross-sectional analysis to determine FAI differences among groups. Longitudinal analysis in PWH...

Association of HIV infection with outcomes among adults hospitalized with COVID-19
Conclusion: In the largest study of PWH hospitalized with COVID-19 in the United States to date, we did not find significant associations between HIV and adverse outcomes including in-hospital mortality, MACE, or severity of illness. (Source: AIDS)

Sex differences in type 2 diabetes mellitus prevalence among persons with HIV
Objective: To examine whether type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is more common among women with HIV (WWH) than men with HIV (MWH). Design: A cross-sectional analysis of a demographically heterogenous population-based sample of more than 64 million patients in the United States. Methods: Using the Explorys (IBM) database, compare the prevalence of T2DM among men and women without HIV and influence of HIV on T2DM by sex controlling for confounding factors. Results: From 19 182 775 persons included in the study, 39 485 were with HIV. Rates of obesity was higher among WWH than MWH (58 vs. 35%). Pre...

Safety and immunogenicity of V114, a 15-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine, in adults living with HIV
Objectives: To evaluate safety and immunogenicity of V114 [15-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV) containing serotypes 1, 3, 4, 5, 6A, 6B, 7F, 9V, 14, 18C, 19A, 19F, 22F, 23F, and 33F], followed by 23-valent pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine (PPSV23) 8 weeks later, in adults living with HIV. Design: In this phase 3 study (V114-018; NCT03480802), pneumococcal vaccine-naive adults with HIV (CD4+ cell count ≥50 cells/μl, plasma HIV RNA (Source: AIDS)

Preserved central nervous system functioning after use of romidepsin as a latency-reversing agent in an HIV cure strategy
Conclusion: No detrimental effects on cognitive status, functional outcomes, or brain imaging parameters were observed after using the HDACi RMD as latency-reversing agent with the MVA.HIVconsv vaccine in early-treated HIV-1-infected individuals. CNS safety was also confirmed after completion of the MAP. (Source: AIDS)

Telemedicine and visit completion among people with HIV during the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic compared with prepandemic
We describe the impact of telemedicine on access to care for people with HIV (PWH) by comparing the proportion of PWH engaged in care prior to and during the COVID-19 pandemic. Design and methods: We conducted an observational analysis of patients enrolled in the Johns Hopkins HIV Clinical Cohort, a single-center cohort of patients at an urban HIV subspecialty clinic affiliated with an academic center. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the clinic transitioned from in-person to mostly telemedicine visits. We compared patients receiving care in two time periods. The prepandemic period included 2010 people with at least on...

Peripheral artery disease and physical function in women with and without HIV
Conclusion: In middle-aged women with and without HIV infection, greater PAD severity is associated with progressively slower gait speed. Early detection of subclinical PAD may decrease the risk of lower extremity functional impairment and its long-term health consequences. (Source: AIDS)

Antiretroviral therapy for HIV and intrahepatic hepatitis C virus replication
Conclusion: These are the first data to show that ART control of HIV reduces the intrahepatic burden of HCV. Furthermore, our data suggest that HIV affects the pathogenesis of HCV infection by an NK/NK T-cell-mediated mechanism that may involve HLA-E and can be rescued, at least in part, by ART. Distinct effects of treatment with two different interferon-alpha subtypes on HIV-1-associated T-cell activation and dysfunction in humanized mice
Conclusions: Treatment with different IFN-α subtypes had distinctive effects on T cells during HIV-1 infection. IFN-α14 was associated with fewer indicators of T-cell dysfunction whereas IFN-α2 treatment had little impact. (Source: AIDS)

HIV care outcomes among transgender persons with HIV infection in the United States, 2006–2021
Conclusions: HIV care outcomes for TW were not ideal, and research gaps exists for TM. High heterogeneity was observed; therefore, caution should be taken interpreting the findings. Integrating transgender-specific health needs are needed to improve outcomes of transgender persons across the HIV care continuum. (Source: AIDS)

Reaching for the ‘first 95’: a cross-country analysis of HIV self-testing in nine countries in sub-Saharan Africa
Conclusion: HIVST awareness and uptake were low. Rural, less educated, and lower income populations were least likely to have heard of or used HIVST. Efforts to scale-up HIVST in these settings should aim to reach these less advantaged groups. (Source: AIDS)

Neonatal deaths among infants born to women living with HIV in the UK and Ireland
Conclusions: The vertical transmission rate in the UK, at 3 per 1000, is now lower than the neonatal mortality rate among infants born to women living with HIV. More research is needed to investigate the complex relationship between ART, preterm delivery and neonatal death in order to improve all perinatal outcomes. (Source: AIDS)
