Cost of disease progression among US patients with human epidermal growth factor receptor 2-positive metastatic breast cancer
Conclusion: Disease progression was associated with significant increases in HCRU and costs. Delays in progression were associated with lower cumulative healthcare costs. Earlier use of more clinically effective treatments to delay progression may reduce the economic burden among these patients.PMID:38647165 | PMC:PMC11036880 | DOI:10.57264/cer-2023-0166 (Source: Journal of Comparative Effectiveness Research)

Audiometry Interpretation for Hearing Loss in Adults
Am Fam Physician. 2024 Apr;109(4):316-323.ABSTRACTHearing loss is a prevalent, chronic condition in the United States; it is often gradual and progressive and is underreported by patients and undertreated by physicians. The impaired ability to effectively hear and communicate may result in negative emotional, cognitive, economic, and social consequences for individuals and may pose a safety risk. Questionnaires and smartphone apps are available to help identify and evaluate self-perceived hearing loss. Physicians should assess for objective hearing impairment when the patient or family member raises a concern or if cogniti...

Practical training concept for perfusionists at the heart and diabetes center Nordrhein-Westfalen
CONCLUSION: The aim of the practical semester is for the student to be in a position at the end of the semester to independently supervise simple cardiac surgery procedures with the aid of the Extra- Corporal Circulation (ECC) and to carry this out in accordance with the currently valid guidelines and directives (1-8) and the departmental procedural instructions based on them. Great emphasis is placed to the students becoming aware of their competence to act, knowing their limits and being able to assess when these limits have been reached and the involvement of experienced colleagues is necessary to ensure patient safety....

Epidemiological trends and clinical outcomes of cryptococcosis in a medically insured population in the United States: a claims-based analysis from 2017 to 2019
CONCLUSION: In this study, most cases of cryptococcosis were PWH. Interestingly, while the incidence remained relatively stable in PWH, it slightly increased in those without HIV by the end of the study period. Mortality was highest in NHNT patients.PMID:38645299 | PMC:PMC11027593 | DOI:10.1177/20499361241244967 (Source: Adv Data)

Race, Insurance, and Socioeconomic Influences on Outcomes Following Roux-En-Y Gastric Bypass
Am Surg. 2024 Apr 22:31348241248803. doi: 10.1177/00031348241248803. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe effectiveness of Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) might be shadowed by disparities in outcomes related to patient race and insurance type. We determine the influence of patient race/ethnicity and insurance types on complications following RYGB. We performed a retrospective analysis using data sourced from the National Inpatient Sample Database (2010 to 2019). A multivariate analysis was employed to determine the relationship between patient race/ethnicity and insurance type on RYGB complications. The analysis determined th...

The relationship between relational continuity and family physician follow-up after an antidepressant prescription in older adults: a retrospective cohort study
CONCLUSIONS: Our findings do not provide strong evidence of a relationship between relational continuity of care and higher quality management of antidepressant prescriptions. However, the relationship is slightly more pronounced in rural communities where access to continuous primary care and specialized mental health services is more limited. This may support the ongoing need for the recruitment and retention of primary care providers in rural communities.PMID:38649823 | DOI:10.1186/s12875-024-02361-0 (Source: Primary Care)

Willingness and preferences for long-acting injectable PrEP among US men who have sex with men: a discrete choice experiment
Conclusions A large proportion of MSM expressed a preference for LA-PrEP over daily oral pills. Most respondents chose LA-PrEP regardless of cost, clinic time, side effects or protection level; however, preferences varied by sociodemographics. These varied groups likely require tailored intervention strategies to achieve maximum LA-PrEP uptake and persistence. (Source: BMJ Open)

Cancers, Vol. 16, Pages 1598: No Racial Disparities Observed Using Point-of-Care Genetic Counseling and Testing for Endometrial and Ovarian Cancer in a Diverse Patient Population: A Retrospective Cohort Study
gaux J. Kanis We investigated genetic counseling and testing rates for patients with gynecologic malignancy at a tertiary care center with a large minority population. Our retrospective cohort included newly diagnosed epithelial ovarian, fallopian tube, peritoneal, or endometrial cancer patients between January 2014 and June 2022. For endometrial cancer, 373 patients were identified. A total of 207 (55%) patients were screened using mismatch repair immunohistochemistry (MMR IHC). A total of 82 (40%) had MMR deficiencies on IHC. Of these, 63 (77%) received genetic counseling. A total of 62 (98%) underwent genetic testin...
