Digital musculoskeletal program is associated with decreased joint replacement rates
CONCLUSIONS: These findings suggest that patients who participated in a digital MSK program to manage OA have lower rates of total joint arthroplasty in the 12 months after enrollment.PMID:38603535 | DOI:10.37765/ajmc.2024.89463 (Source: The American Journal of Managed Care)

Impact of care coordination on 30-day readmission, mortality, and costs for heart failure
CONCLUSIONS: High care coordination is associated with decreased 30-day readmission, mortality, and costs for HF. Enhancing coordination of care has the potential to increase the value of care. It is important to monitor coordination of care and develop strategies to maintain high levels of care coordination for HF.PMID:38603537 | DOI:10.37765/ajmc.2024.89533 (Source: The American Journal of Managed Care)

Preference-Based Implementation of Video Consultations in Urban and Rural Regions in Outpatient Care in Germany: Protocol for a Mixed Methods Study
CONCLUSIONS: This study is intended to develop a targeted strategy for health policy makers based on actual preferences and perceived obstacles to the use of video consultations. The results of this study will contribute to further user-oriented development of the implementation of video consultations in German statutory health insurance. Furthermore, the iterative and mixed methods approach used in this study protocol is also suitable for a variety of other research projects.INTERNATIONAL REGISTERED REPORT IDENTIFIER (IRRID): DERR1-10.2196/50932.PMID:38602749 | DOI:10.2196/50932 (Source: Rural Remote Health)

State Medicaid Coverage for Tobacco Cessation Treatments and Barriers to Accessing Treatments - United States, 2018-2022
MMWR Morb Mortal Wkly Rep. 2024 Apr 11;73(14):301-306. doi: 10.15585/mmwr.mm7314a2.ABSTRACTThe prevalence of cigarette smoking among U.S. adults enrolled in Medicaid is higher than among adults with private insurance; more than one in five adults enrolled in Medicaid smokes cigarettes. Smoking cessation reduces the risk for smoking-related disease and death. Effective treatments for smoking cessation are available, and comprehensive, barrier-free insurance coverage of these treatments can increase cessation. However, Medicaid treatment coverage and treatment access barriers vary by state. The American Lung Association coll...

Trends in low-value cancer care during the COVID-19 pandemic
CONCLUSIONS: Low-value cancer care remained prevalent throughout the pandemic. Policy makers should consider changes to payment and incentive design to turn the tide against low-value cancer care.PMID:38603533 | DOI:10.37765/ajmc.2024.89530 (Source: The American Journal of Managed Care)

Prices and complications in hospital-based and freestanding surgery centers
CONCLUSIONS: The higher prices charged in HOPDs for the 3 ambulatory procedures were not balanced by better quality-as measured by rates of procedural complications-compared with procedures performed in nonhospital ASCs.PMID:38603532 | DOI:10.37765/ajmc.2024.89529 (Source: The American Journal of Managed Care)

Effectiveness of Comprehensive Environmental Support for Community-Dwelling Older Adults: A Single-Blind Randomized Controlled Trial
CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: Occupational therapy-based comprehensive environmental support based on CEQ scores was effective, resulting in moderate improvements in health-related quality of life among community-dwelling older adults. Plain-Language Summary: Older adults experience a decline in physical and mental functions along with changes in social relationships. These problems make it challenging for older adults to perform valuable occupations, thus reducing their quality of life. This study demonstrated that occupational therapy based on the Comprehensive Environmental Questionnaire for older adults can improve health...

Self-Pay Outpatient Mental Health Care for Children and Adolescents, by Socioeconomic Status
CONCLUSIONS: The self-pay market for child mental health care potentially exacerbates inequities in access to care by burdening low-income families with high costs. Incentivizing mental health providers to participate in insurance for larger portions of their patient panels, for example, by increasing reimbursement rates and reducing paperwork, may help improve equitable access to mental health care. To the extent that reimbursement rates drive insurance acceptance, the frequency of self-pay mental health visits suggests that mental health services are underreimbursed relative to their benefit to patients and families.PMID...
