Association between multimorbidity and utilization of medical and long-term care among older adults in a rural mountainous area in Japan
CONCLUSION: Multimorbidity was dominant among late-stage older adults living in depopulated mountainous areas of Japan, and the number of morbidities was associated with higher economic costs of medical and long-term care services. Mitigating the impact of multimorbidity among older adults in depopulated regions of Japan is an urgent challenge. Future research should investigate the degree and effectiveness of social protections for vulnerable older adults living in remote areas.PMID:38655230 | PMC:PMC11033674 | DOI:10.2185/jrm.2023-049 (Source: Rural Remote Health)

IJERPH, Vol. 21, Pages 529: A Rapid Review of Interventions to Improve Care for People Who Are Medically Underserved with Multiple Sclerosis, Diabetic Retinopathy, and Lung Cancer
r Marwa Aly In the United States, patients with chronic conditions experience disparities in health outcomes across the care continuum. Among patients with multiple sclerosis, diabetic retinopathy, and lung cancer, there is a lack of evidence summarizing interventions to improve care and decrease these disparities. The aim of this rapid literature review was to identify interventions among patients with these chronic conditions to improve health and reduce disparities in screening, diagnosis, access to treatment and specialists, adherence, and retention in care. Using structured search terms in PubMed and Web of Scie...

Conservative Versus Operative Treatment of Proximal Humerus Fractures in Older Individuals —an Analysis of Insurance Data
CONCLUSION: The conservative treatment of proximal humerus fracture is associated with a lower overall rate of complications due to surgery or trauma, but also with more MAE and TE and higher overall mortality. These findings underline the need for individualized and risk-adjusted treatment recommendations.PMID:38652842 | DOI:10.3238/arztebl.m2024.0059 (Source: Deutsches Arzteblatt International)

Analyzing the dynamics of meningococcal vaccinations initiatives by local government units in Poland (2017-2021) - Scope, challenges and recommendations
CONCLUSIONS: While LGUs activities positively contributed to increased meningococcal vaccination rates, the overall engagement of local governments remains limited. The findings underscore the importance of expanding local government involvement in meningococcal vaccination programs to address public health needs effectively. Improved collaboration and increased funding may enhance the reach and impact of these initiatives.PMID:38653680 | DOI:10.1016/j.vaccine.2024.04.046 (Source: Vaccine)

Factors that Promote and Protect Against Financial Toxicity after Orthopaedic Trauma: A Qualitative Study
CONCLUSION: This qualitative study of orthopaedic trauma patients found work and emotional health-related factors to be primary drivers of financial toxicity after injury. Insurance and support from friends and family were the most frequently reported protective factors. Many participants described the pivotal role of the healthcare team in establishing recovery expectations and facilitating access to social welfare programs.PMID:38652885 | DOI:10.5435/JAAOS-D-23-01071 (Source: The Journal of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons)

Disparities in incidence and survival for patients with Ewing sarcoma in Florida
ConclusionsFlorida Hispanic males have a higher-than-expected incidence of osseous ES compared to the US. Hispanics of both sexes show remarkably worse survival for nonmetastatic disease compared to NHW. This disparity is likely multifactorial and requires further in-depth studies. Audiometry Interpretation for Hearing Loss in Adults
Am Fam Physician. 2024 Apr;109(4):316-323.ABSTRACTHearing loss is a prevalent, chronic condition in the United States; it is often gradual and progressive and is underreported by patients and undertreated by physicians. The impaired ability to effectively hear and communicate may result in negative emotional, cognitive, economic, and social consequences for individuals and may pose a safety risk. Questionnaires and smartphone apps are available to help identify and evaluate self-perceived hearing loss. Physicians should assess for objective hearing impairment when the patient or family member raises a concern or if cogniti...
