Inpatient Cost Burdens of Treating Chronic Hepatitis B in US Hospitals: A Weighted Analysis of a National Database
ConclusionsWe did not find a significant increase in overall costs with CHB inpatients, regardless of the presence of cirrhosis. However, certain groups are more susceptible to escalating costs. Therefore, increased screening and nuanced vaccination planning must be optimized in order to prevent and mitigate these growing cost burdens on vulnerable populations. The emerging therapies are reshaping the first-line treatment for advanced hepatocellular carcinoma: a systematic review and network meta-analysis
CONCLUSION: Compared with sorafenib and lenvatinib, combination therapies based on ICIs significantly improved the prognosis of advanced HCC and demonstrated similar safety. At the same time, the optimal treatment approach should be tailored to individual patient characteristics, such as etiology, tumor staging, and serum alpha-fetoprotein levels. With lower incidence rates of treatment-related adverse events and non-inferior efficacy compared to sorafenib, ICI monotherapies should be prioritized as a first-line treatment approach for patients who are not suitable candidates for ICI-combined therapies.TRIAL REGISTRATION: P...

Preventive Care for Men Who Have Sex With Men
Am Fam Physician. 2024 Apr;109(4):324-332.ABSTRACTMen who have sex with men (MSM) is an inclusive term used to refer to phenotypic males who have insertive or receptive sex (penile-anal or penile-oral) with other phenotypic males, including people who are transgender or have other gender identities. MSM may report their sexual orientation as homosexual, bisexual, heterosexual, or something else, but this stated sexual orientation may not align with their sexual attraction or behaviors. Several health conditions disproportionately affect MSM compared with age-matched heterosexual men, including HIV infection, anal cancer, s...

Cancers, Vol. 16, Pages 1606: Seroprevalence of SARS-CoV-2 and Hepatitis B Virus Coinfections among Ethiopians with Acute Leukemia
new Rawleigh Howe SARS-CoV-2 and blood-borne viral coinfections are well reported. Nevertheless, little is known regarding the seroprevalence of SARS-CoV-2 and coinfection with blood-borne viruses in hematologic malignancy patients in Ethiopia. We aimed to assess the seroprevalence of SARS-CoV-2 and associated infections with hepatitis B and other viruses among adolescent and adult acute leukemia patients at Tikur Anbessa Specialized Hospital, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. A cross-sectional study was conducted from July 2020 to June 2021. Blood samples were tested for the presence of anti-SARS-CoV-2, HBV, HCV, and HIV with ...

Cancers, Vol. 16, Pages 1582: Hepatocellular Carcinoma: Current Drug Therapeutic Status, Advances and Challenges
Wanjin Hong Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the most common form of liver cancer, accounting for ~90% of liver neoplasms. It is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths and the seventh most common cancer worldwide. Although there have been rapid developments in the treatment of HCC over the past decade, the incidence and mortality rates of HCC remain a challenge. With the widespread use of the hepatitis B vaccine and antiviral therapy, the etiology of HCC is shifting more toward metabolic-associated steatohepatitis (MASH). Early-stage HCC can be treated with potentially curative strategies such as surgical...

Trends in Mortality Related to Hepatitis B and C from 1990 to 2019 in the Western Pacific Region
CONCLUSIONS: : Although the mortality rate from hepatitis B and C decreased from 1990 to 2019, notable variation was observed among 27 Western Pacific countries. Efforts targeting hepatitis B and C prevention and treatment are still required in this region, especially for the pandemic countries.PMID:38638100 | DOI:10.5009/gnl230023 (Source: Gut and Liver)

Fonction de l'ARNnc exosomal HEIH dans le carcinome h épatocellulaire associé au virus de l'hépatite B
This study aimed to investigate the expression of exosomal lncRNA-HEIH in B-HCC patients and explore its clinical significance. We collected blood samples from 60 B-HCC patients, 60 non-hepatitis virus-associated HCC (N-HCC) patients, and 50 healthy volunteers. Exosomal lncRNA-HEIH levels were measured by real-time PCR and analyzed for their correlation with patient prognosis using Kaplan-Meier analysis. Multivariate COX regression analysis was conducted to identify factors affecting patient outcomes. The effects of lncRNA-HEIH on carcinogenesis were also investigated by constructing a Huh7 cell line stably expressing the ...

Major open questions in the hepatitis B and D field - Proceedings of the inaugural International emerging hepatitis B and hepatitis D researchers workshop
Virology. 2024 Apr 16;595:110089. doi: 10.1016/j.virol.2024.110089. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe early and mid-career researchers (EMCRs) of scientific communities represent the forefront of research and the future direction in which a field takes. The opinions of this key demographic are not commonly aggregated to audit fields and precisely demonstrate where challenges lie for the future. To address this, we initiated the inaugural International Emerging Researchers Workshop for the global Hepatitis B and Hepatitis D scientific community (75 individuals). The cohort was split into small discussion groups and the sign...
