Cardiogenic shock in pregnancy
BJOG. 2023 Oct 4. doi: 10.1111/1471-0528.17645. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTCardiac disease complicates 1%-4% of pregnancies globally, with a predominance in low and middle-income countries (LMICs). Increasing maternal age, rates of obesity, cardiovascular comorbidities, pre-eclampsia and gestational diabetes all contribute to acquired cardiovascular disease in pregnancy. Additionally, improved survival in congenital heart disease (CHD) has led to increasing numbers of women with CHD undergoing pregnancy. Implementation of individualised care plans formulated through pre-conception counselling and based on national and i...

Primary cardiac sarcomas: A clinicopathologic study in a single institution with 25  years of experience with an emphasis on MDM2 expression and adjuvant therapy for prognosis
ConclusionOur study supports the use of adjuvant treatment in primary cardiac sarcoma, as it was associated with a significantly better overall survival rate. Further consideration of tumor histology may be important in determining the optimal use of adjuvant treatment for different types of sarcomas. Therefore, accurate diagnosis by MDM2 test is important condsidering patient's prognosis and treatment. (Source: Cancer Medicine)

Post-Cardiotomy Shock Syndrome- A Narrative Review of Perioperative Diagnosis and Management.
Post cardiotomy shock (PCS) is generally described as the inability to separate from cardiopulmonary bypass, due to ineffective cardiac output after cardiotomy, caused by a primary cardiac disorder resulting in inadequate tissue perfusion. PCS occurs in 0.5% to 1.5% of contemporary cardiac surgery cases and is accompanied by an in-hospital mortality of approximately 67%. In the last two decades, the incidence of PCS has increased, likely due to the increased age and baseline morbidity of cardiac surgical patients. Transfusion of red blood cells in venoarterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation: A multicenter retrospective observational cohort study
CONCLUSION: RBC transfusion in patients on VA ECMO is very common. The sum of RBC transfusions increases rapidly after ECMO initiation, and is dependent on the Hb threshold applied. This study supports the rationale for prospective studies focusing on indications and thresholds for RBC transfusion.PMID:37668074 | DOI:10.1111/trf.17505 (Source: Transfusion)

Multiple cardiac myxofibrosarcomas with complete right pulmonary artery occlusion: a case report
We reported on a 37-year-old female who presented with chest tightness and dyspnea for a month, dry cough, and occasionally having blood streak sputum for half a month. Echocardiography, cardiac computed tomography and cardiac positron emission tomography revealed multiple tumors in the heart. The right ventricle and right pulmonary artery were involved, with occlusion of the right pulmonary artery. Cardiac tumors were surgically resected and were consistent with low-grade MFS. No recurrence or metastasis occurred at 20 months of follow-up. (Source: Frontiers in Oncology)

Primary Cardiac Fibroblast Cell Culture: Methodological Considerations for Physiologically Relevant Conditions
Am J Physiol Heart Circ Physiol. 2023 Aug 25. doi: 10.1152/ajpheart.00224.2023. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPrimary cardiac fibroblast (CF) tissue culture is a necessary tool for interrogating specific signaling mechanisms that dictate the phenotypic heterogeneity observed in vivo in different disease states. Traditional approaches that utilize tissue culture plastic and nutrient rich medium have been shown to induce CF activation and therefore alter CF subpopulation composition. This shift away from in vivo phenotypes complicate interpretation of results through the lens of the animal model. As the field works to identi...
