Elevated plasma interleukin-8 as a risk factor for mortality in children presenting with cerebral malaria
ConclusionsThe main risk factor of death during CM was thus elevated plasma levels of IL-8 at inclusion. Follow-up of patients until D30 revealed marker profiles of disease aggravation and resolution for markers implicated in neutrophil activation, endothelium activation and damage, inflammatory and oxidative response. These results provide important insight into our understanding of CM pathogenesis and clinical outcome and may have important therapeutic implications.Graphical Abstract (Source: Infectious Diseases of Poverty)

Long-term monitoring of children with Pseudo Tumor Cerebri Syndrome by transbulbar sonography
Eur J Paediatr Neurol. 2023 Jan 19;44:9-17. doi: 10.1016/j.ejpn.2023.01.010. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTDetermination of optic nerve sheath diameter (ONSD) with transbulbar sonography has become an easily accessible and time-effective tool in the assessment of increased intracranial pressure. The aim of our study was to evaluate the usefulness of transbulbar sonography in the initial diagnosis and in follow-up examinations of children and adolescents with the diagnosis of pseudotumor cerebri syndrome (PTCS). We retrospectively reviewed imaging results of 24 patients aged 0.75-17 years with PTCS. Serial transbulbar sonog...

Incidence and long-term outcome of laser pointer maculopathy in children
ConclusionReadily available consumer laser pointers can damage the retina and the underlying retinal pigment epithelium, possibly leading to long-lasting visual impairments. The number of laser pointer injuries has increased over the last years. Therefore, access to laser pointers for children should be strictly controlled. (Source: International Ophthalmology)

Differentiating stages of functional vision loss from glaucoma using the Disc Damage Likelihood Scale and cup:disc ratio
CONCLUSION: This study indicates that both structural staging systems can differentiate severe/end-stage glaucoma from less severe disease, with a moderate advantage of DDLS over CDR. Clinical examination of the optic disc plays an important role in addition to functional assessment when managing severe/end-stage glaucoma.PMID:36653163 | DOI:10.1136/bjo-2022-321643 (Source: The British Journal of Ophthalmology)

Optic neuropathy associated with acute pancreatitis: A case report
In conclusion, the present study verified this decrease of visual functions as a lesion in the visual pathway using VEP, which was also confirmed by magnetic resonance brain imaging.PMID:36588817 | PMC:PMC9780519 | DOI:10.3892/etm.2022.11757 (Source: Experimental and Therapeutic Medicine)

Early onset of age-related changes in the retina of cystine/glutamate antiporter knockout mice
Exp Eye Res. 2022 Dec 28:109364. doi: 10.1016/j.exer.2022.109364. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTTo determine the role of the cystine/glutamate antiporter on retinal structure and function, retinas of C57Bl/6J wild-type and xCT knockout mice, lacking the xCT subunit of the cystine/glutamate antiporter were examined from 6 weeks to 12 months of age. Fundoscopy, optical coherence tomography (OCT), and whole mount retinal autofluorescence imaging were used to visualise age-related retinal spots. Glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) immunolabelling was used to assess retinal stress. Retinal function was evaluated using full-f...

Specific Changes in OCT Imaging Associated with a Novel Mutation of the RS1 Gene in X-Linked Retinoschisis
We report the morphological changes in OCT scans at different stages of life in a family with XLRS and a novel mutation in the RS1 gene. Our 78-year-old index patient presented with visual disturbances that he had experienced since his childhood. After a detailed anamnesis, complete clinical examination and measurement with SD-OCT, we performed germline genetic testing using whole blood DNA on the index patient, his clinically unaffected daughter and her clinically affected son. The OCT examination of the index patient showed nonspecific atrophic macular changes on both sides. A fundoscopy of the 8-year-old grandson showed...
