Preeclampsia and the Retina
AbstractPurpose of ReviewThis review summarizes key findings relating to the association between preeclampsia and retinal disorders.Recent FindingsPreeclampsia is a major cause of maternal morbidity. Pregnant women with preeclampsia frequently describe having visual disturbances. Retinal changes can be identified on fundoscopy in most patients with preeclampsia. While retinal pathology secondary to preeclampsia usually resolves postpartum, there is growing evidence that women with preeclampsia have a higher long-term risk of developing retinal disorders after pregnancy.SummaryPregnant women often experience visual changes....

Optic nerve sheath diameter measurement for the paediatric patient with an acute deterioration in consciousness
AbstractOcular Point of Care Ultrasound (PoCUS) is emerging as a valuable utility within emergency medicine. Optic nerve sheath diameter (ONSD) has been demonstrated to correlate closely with intracranial pressure (ICP) and an elevated measurement can detect raised ICP readily, where fundoscopy may not, owing to both technical challenges and insufficient clinical skills. A previously fit and well 10-year-old girl presented to the paediatric emergency department with worsening headache, fever and lethargy. On examination, her left pupil was large, and not reactive to light. Initially, her GCS was 15 but suddenly dropped to ...

Microvascular changes after pars plana vitrectomy for rhegmatogenous retinal detachment repair: A comparative study based on gas tamponade agent
CONCLUSION: Specific microvascular indices as measured by OCTA were statistically different between the operated and the fellow eyes in the superficial and deep capillary plexus. C3F8 and SF6 as gas tamponades did not seem to differ in their impact on the microvascular parameters.PMID:38043935 | DOI:10.1177/11206721231218656 (Source: European Journal of Ophthalmology)

Optic neuritis after mRNA COVID ‐19 vaccination: a case report
Optic neuritis after mRNA COVID-19 vaccination. Key Clinical MessageOur case reported a 22-year-old male presented with headache, and sudden vision loss, 10  days after receiving the first dose of COVID-19 vaccination. Counting fingers in both eyes was his visual acuity on examination and bilateral optic disc edema on fundoscopy was found. Brain MRI was normal. After methylprednisolone pulse therapy, plasmapheresis, and IV cyclophosphamide courses, th e optic disc edema disappeared, and his visual function did not improve. Reported cases of optic neuritis develop after mRNA COVID-19 vaccination are limited. (Source: Clinical Case Reports)

Retinal hamartomas at different stages in a patient with tuberous sclerosis: A OCT ‐SS description
Key Clinical MessageRetinal astrocytic hamartoma (RAH) is a benign glial tumor that may be present in patients with tuberous sclerosis (TS), contributing to the diagnosis of this syndrome. While hamartomas identified through indirect ophthalmoscopy are often large enough to affect vessels and optic disc anatomy, RAH not detected in previous fundoscopies may become apparent in optical coherence tomography (OCT). The purpose of this report was to describe and characterize RAH with OCT with swept-source technology (OCT-SS), aiming to establish a more comprehensive classification for these hamartomas due to their diverse prese...

Quantitative detection and follow-up of intracranial hypertension in craniosynostosis: an optical coherence tomography study
CONCLUSIONS: The correlation between TRT, OCT fundus image, fundoscopy and particularly for the combination of these parameters with ICP surrogate markers is fair. Increased TRT in the presence of a clinical suspicion of ICH warrants further screening.PMID:37927034 | DOI:10.1097/PRS.0000000000011177 (Source: Hand Surgery)
