Nationwide Long-Term Growth and Developmental Outcomes of Infants for Congenital Anomalies in the Digestive System and Abdominal Wall Defects With Surgery in Korea
CONCLUSION: Infants with congenital anomalies of the digestive system and abdominal wall defects exhibit poor growth and developmental outcomes until 72 months of age. Close monitoring and careful consideration of their growth and development after discharge are required.PMID:38111278 | PMC:PMC10727918 | DOI:10.3346/jkms.2023.38.e372 (Source: J Korean Med Sci)

The History and Legacy of the Foker Process for the Treatment of Long Gap Esophageal Atresia
Historically, children afflicted with long gap esophageal atresia (LGEA) had few options, either esophageal replacement or a life of gastrostomy feeds. In 1997, John Foker from Minnesota revolutionized the treatment of LGEA. His new procedure focused on “traction-induced growth” when the proximal and distal esophageal segments were too far apart for primary repair. Foker’s approach involved placement of pledgeted sutures on both esophageal pouches connected to an externalized traction system which could be serially tightened, allowing for ten sion-induced esophageal growth and a delayed primary repair. Recent advances in the treatment of gastrointestinal motility disorders in children
Expert Rev Gastroenterol Hepatol. 2023 Dec 14. doi: 10.1080/17474124.2023.2295495. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTINTRODUCTION: Paediatric gastrointestinal motility disorders represent some of the most challenging clinical conditions with largely undefined pathogenetic pathways and therefore limited therapeutic options. Herein, we provide an overview of the recent advances in treatment options for these disorders and their clinical impact.AREAS COVERED: PubMed and Medline databases were searched for relevant articles related to treatment of achalasia, esophageal atresia, gastroparesis, PIPO and constipation published betwee...

Selection of Quality Indicators to Evaluate Quality of Care for Patients with Esophageal Atresia Using a Delphi Method
Conclusion This study established a core indicator set of twenty-two baseline characteristics, eight outcome indicators, one structure indicator, and three process indicators for evaluating (quality of) EA care in Europe. These indicators, covering various aspects of EA care, will be implemented in the European Pediatric Surgical Audit to enable recognition of practice variation and focus EA care improvement initiatives. Musculoskeletal deformities after thoracoscopic repair versus conventional open repair for esophageal atresia
CONCLUSION: TR was associated with a decreased incidence of musculoskeletal deformities and comparable complication rates versus COR for esophageal atresia repair. TR may achieve better long-term outcomes in this setting.PMID:38030485 | DOI:10.1016/j.asjsur.2023.11.043 (Source: Asian Journal of Surgery)

Mortality and neurodevelopmental outcomes in very low birth weight infants with esophageal atresia
ConclusionsIn VLBWIs with EA, survival discharge from NICU was still not high. More immature patients and patients with an associated anomaly had worse outcomes. Among patients who survived, NDI was confirmed in a certain number of patients. (Source: Pediatric Surgery International)

A case of antenatally undiagnosed laryngeal atresia with tracheo-esophageal fistula with airway obstruction at birth and its management
Paediatr Anaesth. 2023 Nov 15. doi: 10.1111/pan.14794. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTLaryngeal atresia is a rare congenital anomaly that is usually diagnosed by antenatal ultrasound, however, if undiagnosed presents with desaturation after birth. A term neonate presented with airway obstruction after birth with multiple failed attempts at intubation and was rescued by proseal laryngeal mask airway (LMA). An esophagoscopy using an Ambuscope utilizing a modified connector assembly revealed an opening on the anterior wall of the esophagus with no esophageal atresia, leading to a diagnosis of H-type tracheo-esophageal fistula ...
