Magnetic Resonance Imaging-Based Evaluation of Anatomy and Outcome Prediction in Infants with Esophageal Atresia
Discussion: These results demonstrate that infantswithout a proximal TEF have a larger proximal esophagus and a greater angle of tracheal deviation which is directly correlated with the need for longer post-operative respiratory support. Additionally, these results demonstrate that MRI is a useful tool to assess the anatomy of EA/TEF.Neonatology (Source: Neonatology)

Anastomotic stricture prediction in patients with esophageal atresia with distal fistula
ConclusionsThis study identified an association between long gap and delayed anastomosis with stricture formation. Early and late stricture indices were predictive of stricture formation. (Source: Pediatric Surgery International)

Esophageal Surveillance Practices in Esophageal Atresia Patients: A Survey by the Eastern Pediatric Surgery Network
Endoscopic surveillance guidelines for patients with repaired esophageal atresia (EA) rely primarily on expert opinion. Prior to embarking on a prospective EA surveillance registry, we sought to understand EA surveillance practices within the Eastern Pediatric Surgery Network (EPSN). Longitudinal force measurement and its relationship to technical competence for esophageal anastomosis in a thoracoscopic esophageal atresia/tracheo-esophageal fistula simulator
Thoracoscopic esophageal atresia with tracheo-esophageal fistula (EA/TEF) repair requires the gentle manipulation of delicate tissue. Force sensors were attached to the upper and lower esophagus of a 3D-printed EA/TEF simulator to explore force parameters as markers of performance. (Source: Journal of Pediatric Surgery)

Variability in the Reporting of Baseline Characteristics, Treatment, and Outcomes in Esophageal Atresia Publications: A Systematic Review
Conclusion This study demonstrates considerable heterogeneity of studied parameters in EA research, emphasizing the need for standardized reporting to compare results of EA research. Additionally, the identified items may help develop an informed, evidence-based consensus on outcome measurement in esophageal atresia research and standardized data collection in registries or clinical audits, thereby enabling benchmarking and comparing care between centers, regions, and countries. Update on aortopexy and posterior tracheopexy for tracheomalacia in patients with esophageal atresia
AbstractDespite improving the survival after repair of esophageal atresia (EA), the morbidity of EA repair remains high. Specifically, tracheomalacia (TM) is one of the most frequent complications of EA repair. Continuous positive airway pressure is generally applied for the treatment of TM. However, surgical intervention is required against an apparent life-threatening event or inability to perform extubation for a long period. According to our review, most cases of TM showed symptom improvement after aortopexy. The ratio of the trachea ’s lateral and anterior–posterior diameter at the brachiocephalic artery crossing ...

The Role of Oral Feeding Time and Sham Feeding on Oropharyngeal Swallowing Functions in Children with Esophageal Atresia
AbstractA retrospective study was performed to evaluate the role of oral feeding (OF) time and sham feeding (SF) on oral-pharyngeal swallowing functions in children with esophageal atresia (EA). Patients with EA were evaluated for age, sex, and types of atresia, time to start OF and surgical complications. Three to six weeks after full OF, videofluoroscopic swallowing evaluation (VFSE) was performed, and Penetration Aspiration Score (PAS, no aspiration  = 1, penetration = 2–5, aspiration = 6–8), delay in swallowing reflex and residue after liquid and pudding consistency were noted. Patients were divided int...

Surgical Management of Acute Life-Threatening Events Affecting Esophageal Atresia and/or Tracheoesophageal Fistula Patients
Following surgical correction, many patients with esophageal atresia with or without tracheoesophageal fistula (EA/TEF) present to the emergency department (ED) with acute airway complications. We sought to determine the incidence and risk factors for severe acute life-threatening events (ALTEs) in pediatric patients with repaired congenital EA/TEF and the outcomes of operative interventions. Surgical neonates in a low-resource setting: Baseline nutrition and outcome assessment
Congenital anomalies necessitating prolonged fasting have a high mortality in low-income settings, partially due to malnutrition and electrolyte disturbances in the absence of parenteral nutrition (PN). Interventions to address these problems require an accurate baseline quantification of the morbidity and mortality of this population. This prospective study aimed to determine peri-operative morbidity, fluid and electrolyte disturbance, growth, and mortality in neonates with gastroschisis (GS), intestinal atresia (IA), and esophageal atresia (EA) in Uganda. Educating Mothers to Detect Signs of Congenital Pediatric Conditions in an Effort to Strengthen Pediatric Surgical Systems in LMICS
A male child was born on 11/11/2016 in the largest pediatric government hospital in the entire state of Tamil Nadu, India. This hospital provides care for children from low socio-economic backgrounds and is a free hospital. The baby was born with esophageal atresia, tracheoesophageal fistula, respiratory failure of newborn, and septicemia of newborn. Surgery was performed on the newborn, including lung decortication, ligation esophagus, laparotomy, and duodenoduodenostomy. The patient was not kept in the NICU post operation and died 4 days later.
