Esophageal Atresia and Gastric Ectopic Pancreas: Is There a Real Association?
Conclusion The incidence of gastric HP is more common in patients with EA, with the female gender being a risk factor for their association. Active search and follow-up is recommended as it may become symptomatic anytime and need resection. Lessons Learned from the First-in-Human Compassionate Use of Connect-EATM in Ten Patients with Esophageal Atresia
Delayed primary repair of esophageal atresia in patients with high-risk physiologic and anatomic comorbidities remains a daunting challenge with an increased risk for peri-operative morbidity and mortality via conventional repair. The Connect-EA device facilitates the endoscopic creation of a secure esophageal anastomosis. This follow-up study reports our long-term outcomes with the novel esophageal magnetic compression anastomosis (EMCA) Connect-EA device for EA repair, as well as lessons learned from the ten first-in-human cases. Genes, Vol. 14, Pages 1822: Epigenetic Findings in Twins with Esophageal Atresia
Robert Śmigiel Esophageal atresia (EA) is the most common malformation of the upper gastrointestinal tract. The estimated incidence of EA is 1 in 3500 births. EA is more frequently observed in boys and in twins. The exact cause of isolated EA remains unknown; a multifactorial etiology, including epigenetic gene expression modifications, is considered. The study included six pairs of twins (three pairs of monozygotic twins and three pairs of dizygotic twins) in which one child was born with EA as an isolated defect, while the other twin was healthy. DNA samples were obtained from the blood and esophageal tissue of the...

Right phrenic nerve palsy following long-gap esophageal atresia and tracheoesophageal fistula repair
Ashitosh D Pokharkar, M Aditya, Deepak Kandpal, Saroja Balan, Vidya Gupta, Sujit K ChowdharyJournal of Indian Association of Pediatric Surgeons 2023 28(5):433-435 Esophageal atresia (EA) and tracheoesophageal fistula (TEF) are surgically correctable congenital anomalies with reported surgical common complications such as anastomotic leaks, recurrent TEF, and esophageal strictures; however, phrenic nerve injury (PNI) is a very rare but possible complication which we have highlighted in our case report. Here, we report a baby girl operated for long-gap EA and TEF having respiratory distress and failed attempts to wean off o...

Vocal Cord Paralysis after Repair of Esophageal Atresia
Conclusion Repair of EA is associated with a considerable risk of VCP and associated morbidity. Cervical EA surgery significantly increased the risk of VCP. Bilateral VCP may eventually require laryngotracheal expansion surgery. Developing balloon dilatation sizing guidance for anastomotic stricture dilatation following oesophageal atresia repair
ConclusionFluoroscopic balloon dilatation is a safe and effective method to treat anastomotic stricture following oesophageal atresia repair. Previous studies have shown correlation between patient weight and oesophageal diameter. We propose guidance for using an appropriate balloon size based on patient ’s weight with the aim to reduce complication. (Source: Pediatric Surgery International)
