< i > Purpureocillium lilacinum < /i > for plant growth promotion and biocontrol against root-knot nematodes infecting eggplant
by Masudulla Khan, Kiwamu TanakaPurpureocillium lilacinum is a biocontrol Ascomycota fungus against various plant pathogens. In the present study, the efficacy ofP.lilacinum was evaluated against a root-knot nematode,Meloidogyne incognita that infects eggplants. We performed an in vitro experiment in which the direct effects ofP.lilacinum on the second-stage juvenile survival and egg hatching ofM.incognita were tested at different exposure times. The results showed thatP.lilacinum significantly reduced the rates of egg hatching and juvenile survival in a dose-dependent manner. Microscopic observation demonstrated thatP.lil...

Bacterial expression systems based on Tymovirus-like particles for the presentation of vaccine antigens
Virus-like particles (VLPs) are virus-derived artificial nanostructures that resemble a native virus-stimulating immune system through highly repetitive surface structures. Improved safety profiles, flexibility in vaccine construction, and the ease of VLP production and purification have highlighted VLPs as attractive candidates for universal vaccine platform generation, although exploration of different types of expression systems for their development is needed. Here, we demonstrate the construction of several simple Escherichia coli expression systems for the generation of eggplant mosaic virus (EMV) VLP-derived vaccine...

Molecules, Vol. 28, Pages 2835: Evaluation of the Antihypertensive Activity of Eggplant Acetylcholine and & gamma;-Aminobutyric Acid in Spontaneously Hypertensive Rats
In conclusion, ACh is the main component associated with the antihypertensive effects of eggplant but GABA within eggplants has a minimal effect in this regard. Thus, compared with GABA, ACh could be a more effective functional food constituent for lowering blood pressure. (Source: Molecules)

Anthocyanin-induced color changes in bacterial cellulose nanofibers for the accurate and selective detection of Cu(II) in water samples
Chemosphere. 2023 Mar 18:138459. doi: 10.1016/j.chemosphere.2023.138459. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe environment and our health are negatively impacted by heavy metal ions, like Cu(II). The present study developed a green and effective metallochromic sensor that detects copper (Cu(II)) ions in solution and solid state using anthocyanin extract from black eggplant peels embedded in bacterial cellulose nanofibers (BCNF). Cu(II) is quantitatively detected by the sensing method with detection limits between 10-400 ppm and 20-300 ppm in solution and solid state, respectively. In the solution state, we depicted a sensor fo...

Characterization and complete genome sequence analysis of the novel phage RPZH3 infecting Ralstonia solanacearum
AbstractA novel lyticRalstonia phage, RPZH3, was isolated from the soil of a tobacco field via a double agar overlay plaque assay. The phage has an icosahedral head 75  ± 5 nm in diameter with a short tail about 15 ± 5 nm in length. It was able to infect 18 out of 30 tested strains ofR. solanacearum isolated from tobacco, sweet potato, tomato, pepper, and eggplant. The latent period of the phage was 80 min, and the burst period was 60 min with a burst size of about 27 pfu/cell. The phage was stable at pH 4 –12 at 28°C, and it was also stable at temperatures from 45°C to 60°C at pH 7.0. The complete genome of...

SmCIP7, a COP1 interactive protein, positively regulates anthocyanin accumulation and fruit size in eggplant
Int J Biol Macromol. 2023 Feb 16:123729. doi: 10.1016/j.ijbiomac.2023.123729. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIn higher plants, COP1 (Constitutively Photomorphogenic 1) acts as a central regulator of light-signaling networks and globally conditions the target proteins via the ubiquitin-proteasome pathway. However, the function of COP1-interacting proteins in light-regulated fruit coloration and development remains unknown in Solanaceous plants. Here, a COP1-interacting protein-encoding gene, SmCIP7, expressed specifically in the eggplant (Solanum melongena L.) fruit, was isolated. Gene-specific silencing of SmCIP7 using RNA ...

The influence of different cooking treatments on vegetables' bolus properties
Int J Food Sci Nutr. 2023 Feb 2:1-10. doi: 10.1080/09637486.2023.2174501. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe influence of boiling, steaming, grilling and sous-vide treatments on bolus properties of vegetables was investigated. Cooking produced potato boluses with large particles or pasty boluses unsuitable for analysis. Celeriac preserved its brittleness and produced more small particles as mastication prolonged. Eggplant and zucchini were similar and both produced relatively large particles throughout the mastication. Saliva incorporation results showed an uncommon trend since boluses from the moment of swallowing did not ...
