Measurement of microstructural changes promoted by ultrasound application on plant materials with different porosity
Ultrason Sonochem. 2022 Jun 30;88:106087. doi: 10.1016/j.ultsonch.2022.106087. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThis research investigated the effects of ultrasound application (192 ± 6 W/L) on the microstructure of vegetables/fruits with different porosities, cell sizes and patterns (eggplants, beetroots, and apples), submitted to an immersion treatment in different liquids: distilled water, citric acid (1% w/v), and the vegetable/fruit juice, at 25 °C during 5 min. The ultrasound application did not significantly (p > 0.05) affect the size of the cells of the most porous material (eggplant) compared to the samples imme...

Rep-PCR Analyses Reveal Genetic Variation of Ralstonia solanacearum Causing Wilt of Solanaceaous Vegetables in Bangladesh
Curr Microbiol. 2022 Jun 29;79(8):234. doi: 10.1007/s00284-022-02932-3.ABSTRACTRalstonia solanacearum, a soil-borne and seed-borne plant pathogenic bacterium, causes bacterial wilt to several important crop plants causing substantial economic losses. To provide population information on this pathogen for developing effective control strategies, Rep-PCR was used to analyze the genetic variation of 18 representative isolates of R. solanacearum collected in Bangladesh. Phenotypic analyses revealed that all eighteen isolates belong to biotype 3 with wide diversity in aggressiveness on eggplant, tomato, and chili. Rep-PCR studi...

Integrating Transcriptomic and Metabolomic Analyses to Explore the Effect of Color Under Fruit Calyx on That of Fruit Apex in Eggplant (Solanum melongena L.)
Fruit color is an important commercial characteristic of eggplant (Solanum melongena L.), which affects both the profits of growers and consumer choice. Two eggplant inbred lines were discovered: “Z,” which is a light purple color under the fruit calyx, with purple on the fruit apex; and “L,” fruits of which are green under the calyx and at the apex. To determine the molecular mechanisms underlying the effect of fruit peel color under the calyx on that at the fruit apex, we conducted a combined transcriptomic and metabolomic analyses of the Z and L inbred eggplant lines. Transcriptome analysis of peel samples from ...

Viruses, Vol. 14, Pages 1331: Evaluation of New Polyclonal Antibody Developed for Serological Diagnostics of Tomato Mosaic Virus
el Mihálik Plant viruses threaten agricultural production by reducing the yield, quality, and economical benefits. Tomato mosaic virus (ToMV) from the genus Tobamovirus causes serious losses in the quantity and quality of tomato production. The management of plant protection is very difficult, mainly due to the vector-less transmission of ToMV. Resistant breeding generally has low effectiveness. The most practical approach is the use of a rapid diagnostic assay of the virus’ presence before the symptoms occur in plants, followed by the eradication of virus-infected plants. Such approaches also include se...

The powerful Solanaceae: Food and nutraceutical applications in a sustainable world
Adv Food Nutr Res. 2022;100:131-172. doi: 10.1016/bs.afnr.2022.03.004. Epub 2022 May 12.ABSTRACTThe Solanaceae family is considered one of the most important families among plant species because, on one hand encompasses many staple food crops of the human diet while, on the other hand, it includes species rich in powerful secondary metabolites that could be valorized in medicine or drug formulation as well as nutraceuticals and food supplements. The main genera are Solanum, Capsicum, Physalis, and Lycium which comprise several important cultivated crops (e.g., tomato, pepper, eggplant, tomatillo, and goji berry), as well a...
