Extraction of honokiol from < em > Artemisia argyi < /em > and < em > in vitro < /em > and < em > in vivo < /em > investigation of its antifungal activity
In this study, we separated and identified antifungal compounds from four traditional Chinese medicine extracts and evaluated their antifungal activities in vitro and in vivo. In vitro, honokiol extracted from Artemisia argyi showed broad-spectrum antimicrobial and mycelial inhibitory activity with EC50 in the range 3.56 - 33.85 μg/mL against eight plant pathogens. q-PCR indicated that honokiol might induce cell cancerisation and inhibit cellular respiration, which provided significant insights into honokiol function in tobacco resistance to molecular mechanisms of the phytopathogenic fungus Phytophthora nicotianae. In vi...

Acetaminophen Levels Found in Recycled Wastewater Alter Soil Microbial Community Structure and Functional Diversity
Microb Ecol. 2022 May 4. doi: 10.1007/s00248-022-02022-8. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe practice of using recycled wastewater (RWW) has been successfully adopted to address the growing demand for clean water. However, chemicals of emerging concern (CECs) including pharmaceutical products remain in the RWW even after additional cleaning. When RWW is used to irrigate crops or landscapes, these chemicals can enter these and adjacent environments. Unfortunately, the overall composition and concentrations of CECs found in different RWW sources vary, and even the same source can vary over time. Therefore, we selected one com...

Molecules, Vol. 27, Pages 2410: The Phenolics and Antioxidant Properties of Black and Purple versus White Eggplant Cultivars
Faik Ahmet Ayaz The total phenolic content, anthocyanins, phenolic acids, antioxidant capacity and α-amylase inhibitory activity of black (Aydin Siyahi), purple (Kadife Kemer) and white (Trabzon Kadife) eggplants grown in Turkey were subjected to a comparative investigation. The black cultivar exhibited the highest total phenolic (17,193 and 6552 mg gallic acid equivalent/kg fw), flavonoid (3019 and 1160 quercetin equivalent/kg fw) and anthocyanin (1686 and 6167 g delphinidin-3-O-glucoside equivalent/kg fw) contents in crude extracts of the peel and pulp. The majority of the caffeic acid was identified in...

Potential of biosynthesized zinc oxide nanoparticles to control Fusarium wilt disease in eggplant (Solanum melongena) and promote plant growth
In this study, a novel, non-toxic, eco-friendly zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO-NPs) was used instead of the synthetic fungicides widely used to control the destructive phytopathogenic fungus Fusarium oxysporum, the causative agent of wilt disease in Solanum melongena L. Herein, the biosynthesized ZnO-NPs was carried out by Penicillium expansum ATCC 7861. In vitro, mycosynthesized ZnO-NPs exhibited antifungal activity against Fusarium oxysporum. In vivo, ZnO-NPs suppressed Fusarium wilt disease in cultivated Solanum melongena L. by decreasing the disease severity with 75% of plant protection. Moreover, ZnO-NPs stimulated the...

Biocontrol Streptomyces Induces Resistance to Bacterial Wilt by Increasing Defense-Related Enzyme Activity in Solanum melongena L
Curr Microbiol. 2022 Mar 27;79(5):146. doi: 10.1007/s00284-022-02832-6.ABSTRACTStreptomyces strains were isolated from rhizosphere soil and evaluated for in vitro plant growth and antagonistic potential against Ralstonia solanacearum. Based on their in vitro screening, seven Streptomyces were evaluated for plant growth promotion (PGP) and biocontrol efficacy by in-planta and pot culture study. In the in-planta study, Streptomyces-treated eggplant seeds showed better germination percentage, plant growth, and disease occurrence against R. solanacearum than the control treatment. Hence, all seven Streptomyces cultures were de...
