Ecancermedicalscience. 2024 Jan 8;18:1653. doi: 10.3332/ecancer.2024.1653. eCollection 2024.ABSTRACTBACKGROUND: The advent of precision oncology (PO) has revolutionised diagnostic and follow up strategies and improved clinical outcomes for cancer patients. However, socio-economic inequalities in the level of implementation of PO in different countries is a prevailing issue. To improve this situation, the Latin America Patients Academy has gathered the recommendations of healthcare professionals and social civil members experienced in cancer management from Mexico, Guatemala, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Panama, Colombia...

The objective of this study was to explore the differences in tobacco-attributable disease and economic burden between men and women in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Mexico, and Peru.METHODS: We used a previously validated economic model to quantify the impact of tobacco-related illnesses, including morbidity, mortality, healthcare costs, productivity losses, informal care expenses, and DALYs, by gender and age. We utilized data from national surveys, records, studies, and expert opinions to populate the model.RESULTS: In 2020, there were 351,000 smoking-attributable deaths. Men accounted for 69%...

Digital health and the promise of equity in maternity care: A mixed methods multi-country assessment on the use of information and communication technologies in healthcare facilities in Latin America and the Caribbean
CONCLUSION: Digital health for maternity care provision relied on commonly available technology and did not necessitate highly sophisticated systems, making it a sustainable and replicable strategy. However, disparities in access to digital health remain and many facilities in rural and remote areas lacked connectivity. Use of ICTs in maternity care depended on countries' long-term commitments to achieving universal health and digital coverage.PMID:38412170 | PMC:PMC10898739 | DOI:10.1371/journal.pone.0298902 (Source: Rural Remote Health)

Seroprevalence of trypanosomosis and associated risk factors in cattle from coast and amazonian provinces of Ecuador
AbstractTrypanosomosis is a tropical disease caused by various protozoan haemoparasites, which affects wild and domestic animals, the latter ones related to worldwide livestock production systems. Species such asTrypanosoma vivax andTrypanosoma evansi have been described using serological and molecular tools in several countries from South and Central America. However, Ecuador presents a relevant knowledge gap in the associated general epidemiology and risk factors of the disease. Therefore, the objective of this study was to determine the seroprevalence of trypanosomosis in cattle from different regions of Ecuador. 745 se...

Geographical and temporal distribution of multidrug-resistant Salmonella Infantis in Europe and the Americas
Recently emerged S. Infantis strains carrying resistance to several commonly used antimicrobials have been reported from different parts of the globe, causing human cases of salmonellosis and with occurrence reported predominantly in broiler chickens. Here, we performed phylogenetic and genetic clustering analyses to describe the population structure of 417 S. Infantis originating from multiple European countries and the Americas collected between 1985 and 2019. Of these, 171 were collected from 56 distinct premises located in England and Wales (E/W) between 2009 and 2019, including isolates linked to incursions of multidr...

Physical Activity Policies at National and Subnational Levels: A Study in Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, and Mexico
CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrated that collecting national and subnational PA policy data across countries with the active collaboration of the GoPA! network was feasible. We also successfully identified governmental interactions throughout the PA policy process, suggesting suboptimal engagement between national and subnational levels.PMID:38340713 | DOI:10.1123/jpah.2023-0342 (Source: Health Physics)
