Phage therapy: resurrecting a historical solution for the contemporary challenge of rising antibiotic resistance in Latin America
Expert Rev Anti Infect Ther. 2024 Jan-Jun;22(1-3):19-23. doi: 10.1080/14787210.2024.2305842. Epub 2024 Feb 12.ABSTRACTINTRODUCTION: Antimicrobial resistance in Latin America is a growing concern in both human and non-human animal populations. The economic burden that is likely to be imposed through increased resistance will cause further strains on public health systems and the population at large.AREAS COVERED: We propose the rapid adoption and implementation of phage therapy as a necessary addition to the medical arsenal to help mitigate antimicrobial resistance, with an emphasis on considering the potential benefits tha...

Laser mapping reveals oldest Amazonian cities, built 2500 years ago
Archaeologists once believed the ancient Amazon rainforest was an inhospitable place, sparsely populated by bands of hunter-gatherers. But the remains of enormous earthworks , pyramids, and roads from Bolivia to Brazil discovered over the past 2 decades have proved conclusively that the Amazon was home to large, complex societies long before European colonizers arrived. Now, there’s evidence that another human society—the oldest yet—left its mark on the region: A dense network of interconnected cities, now hidden beneath the forest in Ecuador’s Upano Valley, has been revealed by the laser mapping technolo...

Dietary oily fish intake is inversely associated with moderate-to severe intracranial artery stenosis in older adults of indigenous Ecuadorian ancestry
Information on the association between dietary oily fish intake and intracranial atherosclerosis is limited and contradictory. Inconsistencies might be in part related to heterogeneous designs and differences in race/ethnicity of study populations. We aim to assess whether oily fish intake is inversely associated with intracranial artery stenosis (ICAS) in frequent fish consumers of indigenous ancestry living in coastal Ecuador.
