Breaking the unsustainable paradigm: exploring the relationship between energy consumption, economic development and carbon dioxide emissions in Ecuador
This study attempts to contribute to the discussion by employing a systemic approach and methodology to examine the relationship between energy consumption (EC), gross domestic product (GDP) and carbon dioxide emissions (CO2) in Ecuador using time series from 1990 to 2018 with a mixed methodology (quantitative and qualitative). The energy balance and the enlarged Kaya identity are utilised to quantify the environmental impact of human activities. Furthermore, correlational cointegration and Granger causality tests are used to analyse the long-term and short-term relationships between variables in different sectors. The res...

Molecules, Vol. 28, Pages 8112: Composition and Anti-Acetylcholinesterase Properties of the Essential Oil of the Ecuadorian Endemic Species Eugenia valvata McVaugh
In this study, we investigated the chemical composition and anticholinesterase activity of Eugenia valvata McVaugt (Myrtaceae) collected in southern Ecuador, which was obtained as an essential oil (EO) with a yield of 0.124 ± 0.03% (w/w); as a result of the chemical composition analysis, a total of 58 organic compounds were identified—representing 95.91% of the total volatile compounds—using a stationary phase based on 5% phenyl-methylpolysiloxane, as analyzed via gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and flame ionization detection (GC-FID). The main groups were ...

The moon cycle influences reproductive and productive traits in guinea pigs ( < em > Cavia porcellus < /em > ) from a tropical Andean area
In conclusion, the lunar cycle influenced several productive and reproductive traits in guinea pigs, such as litter size, mortality, number of pups weaned, and individual and litter weaning weights. This valuable information may have practical applications in management of guinea pig production systems.PMID:38093623 | DOI:10.1080/07420528.2023.2294044 (Source: Chronobiology International)

Impact Assessment of Divergence on Post-Approval Changes Classifications of Latin America Region With Europe and the United States, and Propositions to Harmonize Classification Based on Risk as a Path to Build the Trust Between National Regulatory Agencies
Clin Ther. 2023 Dec 12:S0149-2918(23)00441-1. doi: 10.1016/j.clinthera.2023.11.005. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe lack of harmonization in the post-approval changes (PACs) classifications for pharmaceutical products may have an impact on the efficient implementation of PACs and in the supply of medicine, jeopardizing the continuity of therapies, especially in the case of chronic diseases. The percentage of similarity between the PACs classifications existing between countries of Latin America (Mexico, Brazil, Colombia, Venezuela, Argentina, Chile, Ecuador, Peru, and Central America) versus Europe and the United States ...

Network Profile: Improving Response to Malaria in the Amazon through Identification of Inter-Community Networks and Human Mobility in Border Regions of Ecuador, Peru, and Brazil
CONCLUSIONS: Our study provides measures of mobility and connectivity in rural settings where traditional approaches are insufficient, and will allow us to understand mobility's effect on malaria transmission.STRENGTHS AND LIMITATIONS: Strength: Community networks are unmeasured in rural areas of the Amazon, but have been shown to capture human mobility in other regions of the world.Strength: Our design captures social, economic, and human wellbeing connectivity and migration in key indigenous communities along the Peru-Ecuador border as well as in the most important confluence for the Amazon River located in the Brazil-Pe...

Individualised, perioperative open-lung ventilation strategy during one-lung ventilation (iPROVE-OLV): a multicentre, randomised, controlled clinical trial
Lancet Respir Med. 2023 Dec 5:S2213-2600(23)00346-6. doi: 10.1016/S2213-2600(23)00346-6. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTBACKGROUND: It is uncertain whether individualisation of the perioperative open-lung approach (OLA) to ventilation reduces postoperative pulmonary complications in patients undergoing lung resection. We compared a perioperative individualised OLA (iOLA) ventilation strategy with standard lung-protective ventilation in patients undergoing thoracic surgery with one-lung ventilation.METHODS: This multicentre, randomised controlled trial enrolled patients scheduled for open or video-assisted thoracic surgery u...
