Retrospective Evaluation on the Analgesic Activities of 2 Compounded Topical Creams and Voltaren Gel in Chronic Noncancer Pain
The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of 2 compounded topical creams, “Cream I” and “Cream II,” in patients with chronic extremity, joint, musculoskeletal, neuropathic, or other chronic topical pain conditions and compare their efficacy with Voltaren gel. The primary efficacy outcome was the change in visual numeric pain intensity score from pretreatment to posttreatment. The Cream I contained Flurbiprofen (20%), Tramadol (5%), Clonidine (0.2%), Cyclobenzaprine (4%), and Bupivacaine (3%). The Cream II contained Flurbiprofen (20%), Baclofen (2%), Clonidine (0.2%), Gabapentin (10%), and Lidocaine (...

Potentially Inappropriate Anticholinergic Medication Use in Community-Dwelling Older Adults: A National Cross-Sectional Study
Conclusion The study found that approximately one in ten older adults used potentially inappropriate anticholinergic medications. Several predisposing, enabling and need factors were associated with the use of potentially inappropriate anticholinergic medications. Concerted efforts are needed to optimize potentially inappropriate anticholinergic medication use in older adults. (Source: Drugs and Aging)

Element Determination in Pharmaceuticals Using Direct Solid Analysis- Electrothermal Vaporization Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectrometry
A solid sampling electrothermal vaporization inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ETV-ICP OES) method for determination of As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Mn, Mo, Ni, Pb, Pd, Pt, Rh, Ru and V in pharmaceuticals is proposed. Tricyclic pharmaceuticals were directly analyzed due to their difficult decomposition with acids. Pyrolysis and vaporization temperature, sample mass, and reaction gas (Freon) flow rate were evaluated. The effect of organic and inorganic compounds was evaluated for matrix matching. The limits of detection ranged from 0.04 µg g−1 (Cu) to 107 µg g−1 (As) and the relative standard deviation was ...

Medication Effects on Periurethral Sensation and Urethral Sphincter Activity
Conclusions: In women without lower urinary tract symptoms, pseudoephedrine improved urethral sensation but not urethral neuromuscular function on CNE or PFS. Imipramine, cyclobenzaprine, tamsulosin, solifenacin, and placebo did not change urethral sensation or neuromuscular function. (Source: Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery)

Partial to Complete Suppression of Unilateral Noise-Induced Tinnitus in Rats after Cyclobenzaprine Treatment
Abstract Some forms of tinnitus are believed to arise from abnormal central nervous system activity following a single or repeated noise exposure, for which there are no widely accepted pharmacological treatments. One central site that could be related to tinnitus awareness or modulation is the locus coeruleus, a brainstem structure associated with stress, arousal, and attention. In the present study, we evaluated the effects of cyclobenzaprine, a drug known to act on the rat locus coeruleus, on noise-induced tinnitus using Gap Prepulse Inhibition of the Acoustic Startle (GPIAS). In untreated rats, brief ...

Peripartum Pneumocephalus Associated With Epidural Anesthesia For Labor (P5.207)
Conclusions: Though thought to be rare, peripartum pneumocephalus may be more common than previously recognized and should be considered as an occasional etiology of headache following lumbar spinal/epidural anesthesia. Our patients with pneumocephalus had the defining characteristic of immediate and unilateral headache onset at catheter insertion.Disclosure: Dr. Reddi has nothing to disclose.
