In Reply The authors raise 5 issues related to our trial of tirzepatide. First, the glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist class has been available for the treatment of type 2 diabetes since 2005 and for the treatment of obesity since 2014, and has been the subject of increasing worldwide use. Although nausea, diarrhea, constipation, and vomiting are the most common adverse effects of this class of medication, appropriate clinical treatment of patients can reduce these common adverse effects and increase tolerability. Such treatment includes slow titration or downtitration of the medication or symptomatic managem...

Capsules for the Diagnosis and Treatment of Gastrointestinal Motility Disorders- A Game Changer
AbstractPurpose of ReviewOver the last few decades, there have been remarkable strides in endoscopy and radiological imaging that have advanced gastroenterology. However, the management of neurogastroenterological disorders has lagged behind, in part handicapped by the use of catheter-based manometry that is both non-physiological and uncomfortable. The advent of capsule technology has been a game changer for both diagnostic and therapeutic applications.Recent FindingsHere, we discuss several capsule devices that are available or under investigation. There are three technologies that are FDA approved. Wireless motility cap...

Characterization of Initial Gastrointestinal Evaluation of Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Descriptive Study
J Autism Dev Disord. 2024 Apr 15. doi: 10.1007/s10803-024-06318-1. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAutism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a multifactorial, pervasive neurodevelopmental disorder affecting 1 in 36 children in the United States. Knowledge-based, computerized, patient clinical decision support system for perioperative pain, nausea and constipation management: a clinical feasibility study
We report the development and feasibility validation of a knowledge-based CDSS aiming at optimizing the management of perioperative pain, postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV), and laxative medications. This novel CDSS uses patient adaptive testing through a smartphone display, literature-based rules, and individual medical prescriptions to produce direct medical advice for the patient user. Our objective was to test the feasibility of the clinical use of our CDSS in the perioperative setting. This was a prospective single arm, single center, cohort study conducted in Strasbourg University Hospital. The primary outcome ...

Z Gastroenterol. 2024 Apr 11. doi: 10.1055/a-2279-5045. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPhytotherapeutics are gaining influence in the treatment of gastroenterological diseases. Their popularity and growing evidence of efficacy contribute to their integration into medical guidelines. A systematic screening identified recommended phytotherapeutic approaches. Based on current scientific data, some recommendations for the use of phytotherapeutic agents are given. For irritable bowel syndrome the use of peppermint oil is "strongly recommended", especially for pain and flatulence. Other phytotherapeutics such as STW-5, Tibetan Pa...
