Paraneoplastic neuropathies and peripheral nerve hyperexcitability disorders
Handb Clin Neurol. 2024;200:239-273. doi: 10.1016/B978-0-12-823912-4.00020-7.ABSTRACTPeripheral neuropathy is a common referral for patients to the neurologic clinics. Paraneoplastic neuropathies account for a small but high morbidity and mortality subgroup. Symptoms include weakness, sensory loss, sweating irregularity, blood pressure instability, severe constipation, and neuropathic pain. Neuropathy is the first presenting symptom of malignancy among many patients. The molecular and cellular oncogenic immune targets reside within cell bodies, axons, cytoplasms, or surface membranes of neural tissues. A more favorable imm...

A Nursing Pre-Transplant Intervention to Reduce Patients' Uncertainty about Allogeneic Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation
This study used a pretest-posttest single-group design without a control group. Eighteen patients undergoing HSCT participated in the intervention program-which included informational support, confirmation that the patients understood the information provided, and emotional support. Outpatients received the intervention at their initial outpatient visits after their procedure dates were determined, while inpatients received it at discharge following their procedures. The Universal Uncertainty in Illness Scale (UUIS), which consists of 26 items and six subscales, was used as the primary outcome measure. The European Organiz...

Effects of Liqi Tongbian decoction on gut microbiota, SCFAs production, and 5-HT pathway in STC rats with Qi Stagnation Pattern
This study investigates the therapeutic potential of Liqi Tongbian Decoction (LTD) in the treatment of STC, especially in cases involving the context of Qi stagnation, through a multifaceted approach involving the modulation of intestinal flora and short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs). We employed a rat model of STC with Qi Stagnation Pattern, established using the “loperamide + tail-clamping provocation method,” to explore the effects of LTD on fecal characteristics, intestinal motility, and colonic pathology. Importantly, LTD exhibited the ability to increase the richness, diversity, and homogeneity of intestinal flora wh...

Unusual Management of Fecal Impaction in an Adult with Functional Constipation: A Urological Adventure
A 27-year-old male with a history of functional constipation presented for ileostomy closure. He had a 12-cm impacted rectal stool ball precluding safe ileostomy takedown. He underwent multiple unsuccessful attempts at removal including colotomy, antegrade and retrograde enemas and manual disimpaction. The urological team suggested a novel approach using lithotripsy. A 26-French rigid nephroscope and the Olympus ShockPulse SE ultrasonic lithotripter was utilized transanally to break up the impacted stool ball. (Source: Urology)

Italian guidelines for the management of irritable bowel syndrome in children and adolescents
AbstractThe irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a functional gastrointestinal disorder (FGID), whose prevalence has widely increased in pediatric population during the past two decades. The exact pathophysiological mechanism underlying IBS is still uncertain, thus resulting in challenging diagnosis and management. Experts from 4 Italian Societies participated in a Delphi consensus, searching medical literature and voting process on 22 statements on both diagnosis and management of IBS in children. Recommendations and levels of evidence were evaluated according to the grading of recommendations, assessment, development, and e...

Nursing management of patients dealing with spina bifida: from the prenatal diagnosis to adulthood / nursing intervention for the improvement of the impact of urinary and fecal incontinence on the quality of life of people dealing with spina bifida
Conclusionurinary and fecal incontinence have, of course, an impact on the quality of life of people dealing with spina bifida. Nevertheless, we can observe that it is possible to improve the quality of life of these people, letting them feel confident enough to take part in social activities, through education from an incredibly young age, from 0 up to 25 years old and over, supplied by the medical staff and mostly by the parents (previously educated by the medical staff as well). Prevalence of fibromyalgia and irritable bowel syndrome and its association with studying medicine, a cross ‐sectional study in Al‐Baath University, Syria
ConclusionWe found an increased prevalence of IBS among medical students. The prevalence of FM did not show any relation to studying medicine. We recommend additional prospective studies to assess whether studying medicine could be a risk factor for these disorders or not. (Source: Brain and Behavior)

National Survey on bladder and bowel dysfunctions in Autism Spectrum Disorder population
ConclusionThis survey demonstrated that LUTS are very common in the young ASD population and that the prevalence of urinary symptoms is related to higher severity of the ASD condition. Bowel disorders are often associated with urinary symptoms and dysfunctions. Urologists should be aware of the frequent occurrence of urological disorders and symptoms in individuals with ASD and should be involved in their clinical management in a multidisciplinary team that cares for these people. Antegrade Continence Enema Alone for the Management of Functional Constipation and Segmental Colonic Dysmotility (ACE-FC): A Pediatric Colorectal and Pelvic Learning Consortium Study
Conclusion In patients with severe functional constipation and documented segmental colonic dysmotility, ACE alone is an effective treatment modality at 1-year follow-up. Patients without pelvic floor dyssynergia on anorectal manometry are more likely to receive colonic resection after ACE. The vast majority of such patients can avoid a colonic resection. Acute, long-term or non-vincristine-induced peripheral neuropathy among non-Hodgkin lymphoma survivors: Symptoms, daily activities, functional status, and quality of life
CONCLUSION: Numbness and cramps should be addressed in survivors of acute and long-term VIPN. Preventing falls is recommended for NHL survivors with VIPN, and psychological support is suggested for long-term VIPN survivors.PMID:38461728 | DOI:10.1016/j.ejon.2024.102540 (Source: European Journal of Oncology Nursing)
