IBS in med school
Hi Everyone, I'm an incoming M1 with IBS-D and was wondering if there are any others with this issue in med school. I've become progressively sicker over the past year, with significant weight loss (BMI of 16) and pain, chronic weakness, fatigue, and dizziness, as well as recurring fevers, in addition to my diarrhea and constipation. I often find it difficult to get through each day, and can no longer do certain things. For example, I can no longer drive due to my chronic dizziness. Given... Billing question for practicing providers
Hi there, I just had a quick question for practicing providers. I was told by my billing department that I cannot solely bill for mental health, for example depression, anxiety, ADD without a “medical diagnosis.“ I’ve never heard that throughout residency, having build 99213 and 99214s solely based on these diagnoses in the past and never heard any problems. I am told that I need to add “medical diagnosis “like blood pressure elevation, constipation, etc. in order for them to qualify. The... Please help! Possibe CF? Sweat test needed after rectal prolapse in 2 1/2 year old
Hello, This is my very first time posting here. I never thought I would find myself posing questions in regard to CF and my children, as I thought any fear of CF would have been completely put to rest by my prenatal testing and newborn screening. Apparently, as I am learning, this is not always the case. I just got back a little while ago from an over night stay at a children's hospital following my daughter's first experience with rectal prolapse. After speaking with the gastroenterologist at the end of her 24 hour observation period, I learned that it is protocol to send children her age with rectal prolapse for a swe...

Pancreatic sufficient, but losing weight
Quick recap: My DS, 12 years old, was diagnosed with CRMS because of one mutation & one variant (DF508 & 5T/12TG) and borderline sweat tests (40/41). He has chronic constipation and wasn't gaining weight steadily on a growth curve so his Dr prescribed enzymes as a "trial" to see if they would help. He did begin to gain weight but I couldn't help but wonder if he was just catching up with a normal growth spurt or if the enzymes were actually doing something. The Dr that started him on enzymes left her practice and the new Dr agreed that we could do a little testing to see if he actually needed them or not....

Could it be CF in my 14 yo?
My son is 14 years old, weighs 78 lbs and is 4'10". He has had a cough for 2 years now and asthma among other things have been ruled out. He has had pneumonia twice and bronchitis once in this time. He is currently under the care of an endocrinologist because of his growth issues. He is falling farther and farther behind. His latest labs show his FSH to be very low and his LH to be low but not out of range. His vitamin D level continues to stay low despite supplements for the last year. It is currently at 21. He has always struggled with constipation and very large BM's. As an infant he had the same cough he has now t...

Elastase Test--- with or without enzymes??
My son's GI ordered his first fecal elastase 1 test today. He has been on enzymes for a few years as an "experiment" to see if they would help his constipation & promote weight gain, but he's never been given a dx of either PS or PI. The GI said that we should stop the enzymes for about a week before the test so the results will be accurate. From what I've read online the enzymes won't affect the test, but I would hope that the Dr. knows what she's talking about. What have you done before collecting a sample? Should I stop giving him enzymes? Thanks! (Source: Cystic Fibrosis Families Forum)

Fibrosis in the stomach lining.
Can anyone give me any insight on whether fibrosis found in stomach lining is DEFINITELY CF or not? My daughter's GI did a scope and biopsy last Friday and received the results today. She said they found "fibrosis in the stomach lining" and she would have to do further research to find out what that meant. I, of course, could not stop myself from googling and over and over found my queries leading to CF. They also found reactive changes of the esophagus. She is 19 months old with IgG-deficiency, they were doing the scope to look for evidence of celiac's. She has been chronically constipated since we switched fr...

My daughter recently had an endoscopy done. Anesthesiology told me "she had more respiratory secretions than we normally see, typically we see it if someone has a cold" According to her GI doc they "suctioned a great big blob out during extubation and said she should feel some relief now" I did ask anesthesiology if they could culture any secretions they encountered, they said that is not something they do. :( She has had this chronic, productive, daily cough since this past October. Last Friday she had tubes put in both her ears d/t failing her hearing test, large amount of fluid behind her ears and 6 ...

Could I have CF?
I've had what has been diagnosed as horrible allergies my entire life. My nose is completely clogged 365 days a year, to the point where I basically can't breathe through it. What's worse is I have this horrible post nasal drip. It's so thick and copious that I feel like I am constantly choking. I'm coughing and sniffling literally every second of every day. Although I do exercise, I have a hard time breathing when I run. I often feel like I can't breathe deeply enough. I feel like I constantly have a sinus infection, I've had probably 2-3 a year for as long as I can remember. I've had my lung capacity tested before to see...

How to know Creon is helping
Hi, I'm new to the board. My doctor suspects pancreatic insufficiency and I'm trying samples of Creon 36,000. So far I've been trying them two weeks and having mixed results. Some days it feels like my energy is better and I'm making myself eat more fat and calories. However, somedays the constipation and energy is bad. I used to have frequent loose stools, but they stopped being bad after taking antibiotics earlier this year. Now I'm more constipated. But if I eat a lot of fat, the stools will be loose. I have a few questions that I would love to hear thoughts on: How will I know if Creon is working? Does the gas/bloat...

Not taking enzymes...
Because of insurance problems, I haven't been able to take my enzymes for about a week...I've been getting constipation, is this normal? Like I feel that I have to go to the bathroom but after I sit I can't get anything out. Also, I think I've lost a little bit of weight...will that continue to happen? (I don't take a lot of enzymes...usually only 3 a day, have been taking them for 8 years) and I will get this insurance mishap cleared up, but I just wanted to know in the meantime.
