Self-perceived oral health and orofacial aesthetics of cleft patients
ConclusionThis study found differences in self-perceived dental aesthetics: CL/P patients are less satisfied than non-affected controls. CLAP patients are least satisfied, but satisfaction increases with age. (Source: European Archives of Paediatric Dentistry)

Predictors for long-term relapse of orthodontic treatment in patients with cleft lip and palate. A clinical follow-up study
ConclusionsPatients with CLP benefit from their orthodontic therapy in the long term despite an increased tendency to relapse.Clinical relevanceResults of this long-term study could be used to adapt the treatment concept for patients with CLP and reinforce the significance of a patient-centered orthodontic treatment concept for affected patients. Atypical mandibulofacial dysostosis with microcephaly diagnosed through the identification of a novel pathogenic mutation in EFTUD2
CONCLUSIONS: We diagnosed this atypical case of MFDM by the detection of a novel pathogenetic mutation in EFTUD2. We also observed previously unreported features. These findings enrich both the genotypic and phenotypic spectrum of MFDM.PMID:38562046 | DOI:10.1002/mgg3.2426 (Source: Molecular Medicine)

The emotional and social concerns of mothers of children with cleft palate: A cross-sectional study
Among birth defects, a cleft palate is one of the most common defects globally, with a prevalence rate of 1 in 700 live-born children per annum. Caring for a child with cleft palate is considered a challenge for mothers who provide around clock care for these children. Despite this, there is limited knowledge of their experiences and needs particularly in low resource settings. (Source: Journal of Pediatric Nursing)

Barriers in Cleft Service Access in Sub-Saharan Africa: A Thematic Analysis of Practical Needs of Rural Families
CONCLUSIONS: Areas of poor awareness, misinformation from primary health care workers, financial hurdles, multiple transportation logistics and others were identified. Aggressive broadcasting of information through radio, timely treatment and collaboration with influential religious leaders were emphasized. Support, grants and subsidies from government and voluntary agencies are encouraged to mitigate the huge out of pocket cost of cleft care in the region.PMID:38557293 | DOI:10.1177/10556656241244976 (Source: Rural Remote Health)
