Detection of non-cardiac fetal abnormalities by ultrasound at 11-14  weeks: systematic review and meta-analysis
CONCLUSIONS: Accurate detection of congenital anomalies using first trimester ultrasound is feasible. In this study we have determined screening characteristics for individual anomalies and have shown that detection rates and false positive rates are dependent on the type of anomaly. The use of a standardised protocol allows diagnostic performance to be maximised, and this particularly enhances screening performance for the detection of spina bifida, facial clefts and limb reduction defects. Highlighting the types of anomalies amenable to diagnosis and determining favourable screening test factors can support the developme...

Viruses, Vol. 16, Pages 511: Potential of Viruses as Environmental Etiological Factors for Non-Syndromic Orofacial Clefts
In this study, we analyzed the potential of viral infections in the species Homo sapiens as environmental causes of orofacial clefts (OFCs). A scoring system was adapted for qualitatively assessing the potential of viruses to cause cleft lip and/or palate (CL/P). This assessment considered factors such as information from the literature, nucleotide and amino acid similarities, and the presence of Endogenous Viral Elements (EVEs). The analysis involved various algorithm packages within Basic Local Alignment Search Tool 2.13.0 software and databases from the National Center for Biotechnology Information and the International...

Why Craniofacial Surgeons/Researchers Need to be Aware of Native American Myopathy?
Neuropediatrics DOI: 10.1055/a-2271-8619Congenital myopathy type 13 (CMYO13), also known as Native American myopathy, is a rare muscle disease characterized by early-onset hypotonia, muscle weakness, delayed motor milestones, and susceptibility to malignant hyperthermia. The phenotypic spectrum of congenital myopathy type 13 is expanding, with milder forms reported in non-native American patients. The first description of the disease dates to 1987 when Bailey and Bloch described an infant belonging to a Native American tribe with cleft palate, micrognathia, arthrogryposis, and general-anesthesia-induced malignant hyperther...

Elastic Chain Premaxillary Retraction Appliance Does Not Increase Inter-Canthal Dimension in Patients with Bilateral Cleft Lip and Palate
CONCLUSIONS: Inter-medial and inter-lateral canthal dimension increased after ECPR but returned to baseline growth trajectory. These dimensions were above normal at all time-points. There was no difference between those that did and did not have dentofacial orthopedic manipulation.PMID:38515321 | DOI:10.1177/10556656241241200 (Source: The Cleft Palate-Craniofacial Journal)
