Barriers in Cleft Service Access in Sub-Saharan Africa: A Thematic Analysis of Practical Needs of Rural Families
CONCLUSIONS: Areas of poor awareness, misinformation from primary health care workers, financial hurdles, multiple transportation logistics and others were identified. Aggressive broadcasting of information through radio, timely treatment and collaboration with influential religious leaders were emphasized. Support, grants and subsidies from government and voluntary agencies are encouraged to mitigate the huge out of pocket cost of cleft care in the region.PMID:38557293 | DOI:10.1177/10556656241244976 (Source: The Cleft Palate-Craniofacial Journal)

Impact of an International Training on Interventionists' Expertise in Cleft Palate Speech: Results From Oaxaca, Mexico
CONCLUSIONS: Findings provide preliminary support for such two-stage international trainings in preparing local speech interventionists to deliver high-quality speech services to individuals born with cleft palate. While content knowledge appears to be acquired primarily from the online course, the two-stage training incorporating in-person supervised practice working with individuals born with cleft palate may best enhance continued clinical skill development, including replacement of NSOME with evidence-based speech treatment. Such trainings contribute to building capacity for sustainable quality services for this popula...

Effect of prosthetic management of congenital cleft lip and palate on the middle ear function of infants: A clinical trial
Infants with a cleft palate often experience middle ear disease, a condition of great significance, and early prosthetic management of these infants is essential. However, any correlation between prosthetic palatal obturation and middle ear function is unclear. (Source: Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry)

Mature Cystic Oral Teratoma in a Neonate- A Case Report
Conclusion: This case underscores the intricate interplay between antenatal imaging, clinical assessment, and surgical intervention in managing neonatal oral cavity masse s. The successful excision and histopathological confirmation of a mature cystic teratoma highlights the significance of accurate diagnosis and timely intervention. The complexities surrounding neonatal oral cavity masses necessitate a comprehensive approach to optimize patient outcomes. (Source: Indian Journal of Otolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery)

Detection of non-cardiac fetal abnormalities by ultrasound at 11-14  weeks: systematic review and meta-analysis
CONCLUSIONS: Accurate detection of congenital anomalies using first trimester ultrasound is feasible. In this study we have determined screening characteristics for individual anomalies and have shown that detection rates and false positive rates are dependent on the type of anomaly. The use of a standardised protocol allows diagnostic performance to be maximised, and this particularly enhances screening performance for the detection of spina bifida, facial clefts and limb reduction defects. Highlighting the types of anomalies amenable to diagnosis and determining favourable screening test factors can support the developme...
