Facilitators, barriers, and strategies of communication in Malaysian school-age children with non-syndromic cleft lip and palate: Results of in-depth online qualitative interviews
This study explores the perceptions of facilitators, barriers to communication and strategies in Malaysian school-aged children with non-syndromic cleft lip and palate (CL/P), parents, and teachers. Fourteen children with non-syndromic CL/P aged 7 to 12 years, their parents (n = 16), and their teachers (n = 10) were recruited via purposive sampling. Participants were selected based on resilience scores (RS-10; (Wagnild, 2015) distinguishing low (<34) from high resilience (35-40) (Wagnild, 2015). Individual in-depth interviews were conducted online and evaluated qualitatively. The analyses were conducted utilising the gu...

Genetics Plays an Increasingly Important Role in the Management of Plastic Surgical Patients
Genetics has played an increasingly important role in patient management over recent decades, with innovations improving the care of diseases ranging from breast cancer to sickle cell disease. This is also the case in plastic surgery, where genetics informs patient care and offers promising treatment opportunities (Table 1). Already, plastic surgeons leverage genetic innovations to supplement management decisions for some conditions including craniosynostosis, cleft lip and/or palate, and Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome, among others. Effectiveness of secondary furlow palatoplasty with buccal myomucosal flap in correction of velopharyngeal insufficiency in patients with cleft palate
ConclusionsThe incorporation of a buccal myomucosal flap with Furlow palatoplasty was successful in improving hypernasality, speech intelligibility, and nasopharyngoscopic scores in patients with cleft palate.Trial registrationclinicaltrials.gov (NCT05626933).Clinical relevanceThis technique might be the surgical technique of choice while treating patients who are suffering from VPI after cleft palate repair. Velopharyngeal dysfunction and speech-related characteristics in craniofacial microsomia: a retrospective analysis of 223 patients
This study aimed to document the prevalence, severity, and risk factors of velopharyngeal dysfunction (VPD) in craniofacial microsomia (CFM) and to analyse differences in VPD-related speech characteristics between CFM patients without cleft lip and/or palate (CL/P), CFM patients with CL/P, and CL/P patients without CFM (control). A total of 223 patients with CFM were included, of whom 59 had a CL/P. Thirty-four CFM patients had VPD, including 20 with a CL/P. VPD was significantly more prevalent in CFM with CL/P than in CFM without CL/P (odds ratio (OR) 4.1, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.9 –8.7; P (Source: International...

Need for orthognathic surgery in cleft patients from Northern Finland
CONCLUSIONS: The need for orthognathic surgery was greater in the cleft lip palate and cleft palate patient groups compared to cleft lip alveolus or cleft lip groups. This study also found that males from Northern Finland need surgery more often than females.PMID:38605577 | DOI:10.2340/aos.v83.40338 (Source: Acta Odontologica Scandinavica)

The potential up-regulation risk of 3' UTR SNP (rs10787760 G   & gt;  A) for the VAX1 gene is associated with NSCLP in the northwest Chinese population
Gene. 2024 Apr 10:148458. doi: 10.1016/j.gene.2024.148458. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAIMS: To investigate the association between single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in 3'UTR region of VAX1, SYT14 and PAX7 genes and the risk of non-syndromic cleft palate (NSCLP) in a northwest Chinese population.MAIN METHODS: A case-control study was conducted in 406 normal controls and 399 NSCLP patients. Using iMLDRTM genotyping technology, eight SNPs of three genes ((rs10787760, rs7086344 at VAX1), (rs1010113, rs851114, and rs485874 at PAX7), and (rs61820397, rs4609425, rs12133399 at SYT14)) were genotyped to investigate the diff...
