Injectable Modified Sodium Alginate Microspheres for Enhanced Operative Efficiency and Safety in Endoscopic Submucosal Dissection
Biomacromolecules. 2024 Apr 23. doi: 10.1021/acs.biomac.4c00081. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTEndoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) is an effective method for resecting early-stage tumors in the digestive system. To achieve a low injection pressure of the injected fluid and continuous elevation of the mucosa following injection during the ESD technique, we introduced an innovative injectable sodium-alginate-based drug-loaded microsphere (Cipro-ThSA) for ESD surgery, which was generated through an emulsion reaction involving cysteine-modified sodium alginate (ThSA) and ciprofloxacin. Cipro-ThSA microspheres exhibited nota...

Dissemination of IncC plasmids in Salmonella enterica serovar Thompson recovered from seafood and human diarrheic patients in China
In conclusion, to our knowledge, it is the first report of the co-existence of blaCMY-2, qnrS, and qepA in IncC plasmids, and the conjugational transfer contributed to their dissemination in S. Thompson. These findings underline further challenges for the prevention and treatment of Enterobacteriaceae infections posed by IncC plasmids bearing blaCMY-2, qnrS, and qepA.PMID:38653121 | DOI:10.1016/j.ijfoodmicro.2024.110708 (Source: International Journal of Food Microbiology)

Mitigating antimicrobial resistance, an approach to stewardship in canine urinary tract infection
AbstractUrinary tract infection (UTI) caused by antimicrobial resistant bacteria is common in dogs leading to serious health impact in pet animal as well as on human health. Understanding the prevalent uropathogens and their drug susceptibility is essential for limiting the antimicrobial resistance through implementation of stewardship policies. In view of this, present study was envisaged to determine the prevalent bacterial uropathogens and their antibiogram from clinical cases of canine UTI. Urine samples were collected from 35 dogs presented with clinical signs of UTI and a total of 27 bacterial isolates were recovered...

A Day Saved is a Life Saved: Direct Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing from Positively Flagged Blood Culture Bottles and their Concordance with the Routine Method
CONCLUSION: Rapid dAST from positively flagged blood culture bottles proved to significantly reduce the TAT from the time of sample collection to the first availability of antimicrobial susceptibility report with excellent categorical agreement of > 95% using the conventional disc diffusion method. Results obtained were within the acceptance criteria set by U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) guidelines of > 90% categorical agreement for a new method. We were able to obtain excellent concordance for colistin using the E-strip method. Performing dAST not only saves a "day", but its proper implementation would sav...

Simultaneous and on-line detection of organic and heavy metal components in water using a novel nebulization-assisted injection plasma ionization triple quadruple mass spectrometry instrument
In this study, an analytical technique of nebulization-assisted injection plasma ionization mass spectrometry (NI-PIMS) was developed. This novel method enables the simultaneous detection of heavy metals and organic compounds in water system with high sensitivity, which has been demonstrated by the limit of quantification (LOQ) values below 1.0 μg/L for the three sterols (Enrofloxacin, ciprofloxacin, and clenbuterol) and three heavy metals (Pb, Ba, and Cd). Moreover, the method was successfully applied to rapidly analyze real water samples from urban and rural areas in China. The analytical results are available in less t...

Synergistic Inhibitions of Gram-negative Bacteria by Combination Treatment with Ciprofloxacin and a Novel Glucolipid
Chem Biodivers. 2024 Apr 17:e202400578. doi: 10.1002/cbdv.202400578. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPsychrophilic fungus Pseudogymnoascus sp. OUCMDZ-4032 derived from Antarctica was cultivated under 16 ℃ to produce a new glucolipid compound (1). Its structure was elucidated by analysis of detailed spectroscopic data, acid hydrolysis and 1-phenyl-3-methyl-5-pyrazolone precolumn derivatization, and 13C NMR quantum chemical calculations. Though compound 1 did not show inhibitory activity against bacteria, it can reduce the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of ciprofloxacin against Gram-negative bacteria Pseudomonas aeru...

Challenges in the treatment of pediatric Mycoplasma pneumoniae pneumonia
Conclusion:  This report summarizes the clinical significance of macrolide-resistant and refractory MP pneumonia and discusses the efficacy and safety of alternative drugs, with a stepwise approach to the management of MP pneumonia recommended from the viewpoint of clinical practice. What is Known:•Although MP pneumonia is usually a benign self-limited infection with response macrolides as first line therapy, severe life-threatening cases may develop if additional treatment strategies are not effectively implemented.•Macrolide-resistant and refractory MP pneumonia are two conditions that may complicate the clinical cour...

Minimum inhibitory concentrations of Neisseria gonorrhoeae strains in clients of the Amsterdam sexual health clinic with a Dutch versus an international sexual network
Conclusions For three cephalosporin antibiotics, we found Ng strains with slightly higher MICs in clients with partner(s) from Europe or Latin America and the Caribbean. International travel might contribute to the spread of Ng with lower susceptibility. More understanding of the emergence of AMR Ng is needed. (Source: Sexually Transmitted Infections)

Predominance of multidrug-resistant < i > Salmonella < /i > Typhi genotype 4.3.1 with low-level ciprofloxacin resistance in Zanzibar
ConclusionsWe report a high rate of MDR and low-level ciprofloxacin resistantS. Typhi circulating in Zanzibar, belonging to genotype 4.3.1.1, which is widespread in Southeast Asia and African countries and associated with low-level ciprofloxacin resistance. Few therapeutic options are available for treatment of typhoid fever in the study setting. Surveillance of the prevalence, spread and antimicrobial susceptibility ofS. Typhi can guide treatment and control efforts. (Source: PLoS Neglected Tropical Diseases)

Six-year progression of medically treated infective aortitis
CONCLUSIONS: Infective aortitis with mycotic aneurysms is usually treated surgically due to the significant risk of rupture in the acute period. This case suggests that if the acute infective period is passed, the aneurysmal disease stabilises and does not progress.PMID:38626935 | DOI:10.1177/17085381241248724 (Source: Vascular)
