How do I afford medical school and my family?
Hello. I am applying to medical school in the 2023-2024 cycle. I am a non-trad student with a wife and 3 small children. I was told that I could support my family through federal loans during medical school(housing, food, etcs). Is this true or do I need to seek private loans so my family can survive while I attend medical school? Any advice is helpful! Wife is a SAHM. (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Whether to admit “behavioral” children from ED
I’m a CL psychiatrist who sees ED consults also (relatively new, <4 months) and am frequently seeing children presenting to the ED with the following: - Behavioral issues, for example any combination of: threats at school toward peers, violence at home toward family, self-harming when dysregulated by banging head, hitting self, ingesting objects, etc. - Most seem to carry diagnoses of ODD or DMDD, ADHD, conduct disorder, or ASD; - They usually have an outpatient psychiatrist who is at a... Comprehensive Practice
Is this becoming a rarity and pushed less during training? When I was undergrad 10 years ago and worked as a tech at a practice two Docs were what I would consider Comprehensive Ophthalmology. One day was for LASIK and laser procedures. They obviously had a busy cataract practice doing toric and MF IOLs. Both did a decent about of plastics like Blephs and even some Strab work on kids and adults. They had a very busy Retina clinic doing injections for your "straight forward" wet AMD and... Non- Trad Foreign BS to Accelerated BSN to MD
A little tricky situation here: I am a 43-year-old male, single, no children, permanent resident, and I am applying for my US naturalization this year. I hold a bachelor's (4-year degree) in science with a double major in zoology and chemistry from a university in my country of birth in north Africa. I worked in the medical sales industry for over 10 years between 2003 and 2014 with multinational corporations, like JNJ and 3M, in both Egypt and Dubai. I am used to being in the operation... Immediately discouraged on rotations...
Finished first week on rotations in an easy going peds clinic setting. I thought I was coming in mentally, emotionally, and academically fairly prepared after a research year. I'm comfortably knowledgeable in my vaccine schedules, my dev milestones, common PE findings, and - at the risk of sounding cocky - families and kids got along fantastic with me. My clinical skills were a bit rusty, but I picked it up in a day or two. Showed up early and left late every day. I worked mostly with the... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Is this the wrong time to cut back hours and pay?
I am 6.5 years roughly into attending hood where I have been working fairly hard and saving aggressively (200-250) mostly due to being unmarried the first 5, renting, and living on no more than 50k/yr and no kids still. The last 2 years due to being married spending now 100-120k which wasn't easy at first to stomach but now I have adjusted. However, most days end at 6pm ish and esp the last 6 mo I find myself not working out ( used to be 5 days now sat/sun primarily) and always finding... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Considering LMHC path
Hello all, so for the past year I have been dead set on pursuing a PhD in clinical psych and becoming a psychologist. However, after further inspection into this path and taking my restrictions into account (geographic limitation, 3 kids, financial stress, age) it honestly looks like pursuing a masters degree and becoming a LMHC would be the better option for me. What drew me into clinical psych PhDs was that I wanted to work with severe mental illness, but as someone with a semi-severe... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

[Asking for a friend] Should I mention working for a vape company during medical school interviews?
Hi, I know someone that works, not for Juul, but probably one of the bigger competitors. The friend works in one of the RnD departments, and as far as I understand works to ensure that the product is safe for consumers. His argument is that since the product is 100% marketed towards helping adults quit smoking, it could be seen favorably, but I am just a bit concerned that it may come off badly in interviews if they associate it more with kids vaping in high school bathrooms. OMFS residency, feasibility of applying to many schools in only one city....
Howdy. Looking for advice for anyone who knows about applying to OMFS residency but was geographically restricted because of family factors (e.g. wife's high paying job is in this one city and the kids go to school here; moving again would highly undesirable). Lucky for me the city has many residency program options, but I saw some threads regarding externing in a diversity of locations to signal broad interest. Will me externing at 4 schools in the same place be looked on disfavorably for... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Any FM locums docs out there willing to DM me or share their experiences here? I’m about to retire from AF next year. Kids are out of the house, and wife (and cat) supportive of following me around. Looking to work 6-9 mons/year supplemented by military pension. Two different options as an older student
I wish I’d found this forum earlier, but am glad I found it now. I’m a very “non-traditional” student, I never finished my undergrad in my early twenties, and after I sobered up at twenty-four I was happy and grateful to live life as a working class creative person. I’d always thought about becoming a mental health therapist though, and been encouraged in that direction by people in my personal life and recovery communities, and went back and finished my undergraduate degree in my early...
