Longitudinal adherence to surveillance for late effects of cancer treatment: a population-based study of adult survivors of childhood cancer
CMAJ. 2024 Mar 10;196(9):E282-E294. doi: 10.1503/cmaj.231358.ABSTRACTBACKGROUND: Adult survivors of childhood cancer are at elevated risk of morbidity and mortality compared to the general population, but their adherence to lifelong periodic surveillance is suboptimal. We aimed to examine adherence to surveillance guidelines for high-yield tests and identify risk factors for nonadherence in adult survivors of childhood cancer.METHODS: In this retrospective, population-based cohort study, we used health care administrative data from Ontario, Canada, to identify adult survivors of childhood cancer diagnosed between 1986 and ...

GSE226458 Bulk RNA-sequencing of MYCN-overexpressing chicken retinal cell lines
Contributors : Finn Hallb öök ; Hanzhao Zhang ; Dardan Konjusha ; Nima RafatiSeries Type : Expression profiling by high throughput sequencingOrganism : Gallus gallusBackground: MYCN gene is a transcription factor whose amplification and overexpression can lead to tumorigenesis. In retina, MYCN overexpression is related to tumorigenesis of retinoblastoma, a childhood cancer. Purpose: To find out differentially expressed genes in MYCN-overexpressing cells, which will give information of MYCN-related gene expression and possibly find out new pathways in mechanism of retinoblastoma tumorigenesis with MYCN overexpression....

Cancers, Vol. 16, Pages 1119: A Systematic Review of Diagnostic Modalities and Strategies for the Assessment of Complications in Adult Patients with Neurofibromatosis Type 1
Conclusions: This systematic review suggests that there is robust data on diagnostic modalities for adult Neurofibromatosis Type 1 patients in high-income countries, but not for low- and middle-income countries. There is a lack of data on consolidated diagnostic strategies from both high- and low-income countries. Efforts should be made to publish data on usual clinical practice in low- and middle-income countries to develop clinical practice guidelines describing best medical practice to fit a local context. Impact of Risk-Based therapy on late morbidity and mortality in neuroblastoma survivors: a report from the childhood cancer survivor study
CONCLUSION: Survivors of high-risk disease treated in the early days of risk stratification carry a markedly elevated burden of late recurrence, SMN, and organ-related multi-morbidity, while survivors of low/intermediate-risk disease have a modest risk of late adverse outcomes.PMID:38460547 | DOI:10.1093/jnci/djae062 (Source: Cancer Control)

Psychosocial interventions for childhood cancer survivors: Systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized control trials
CONCLUSIONS: Psychosocial interventions were not effective on quality of life and physical activity self-efficacy of childhood cancer survivors, however, long-term interventions provided improvement in these outcomes.REGISTRATION: The protocol for the meta-analysis was registered at PROSPERO (CRD42022375053/22 Nov 2022).PMID:38460392 | DOI:10.1016/j.ejon.2024.102541 (Source: Cancer Control)

Parent childhood experiences, parenting strategies, and youth health-related outcomes in Hispanic families with unhealthy weight: An intergenerational study
Eat Behav. 2024 Mar 6;53:101870. doi: 10.1016/j.eatbeh.2024.101870. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTWe aimed to examine whether (a) parents' childhood family mealtime experiences (CFM) (e.g., mealtime communication-based stress) and parents' socio-demographic characteristics (e.g., education level) predict parents' health-related parenting strategies (e.g., discipline), (b) health-related parenting strategies for eating and physical activity predict youth's health-related outcomes (e.g., dietary intake), (c) parenting strategies mediate the relationship between CFM and youth outcomes. A path model was used to examine the abo...

Taiwanese fathers' experiences of caring for their children during childhood cancer treatment
CONCLUSIONS: During the cancer treatment process, fathers play the roles of the protector and maintainer of family stability and adjust their attitudes and thoughts toward the family members and family life. Healthcare professionals can offer the fathers comprehensive support and improve the family's overall well-being during this demanding period.PMID:38457933 | DOI:10.1016/j.ejon.2024.102543 (Source: European Journal of Oncology Nursing)

Validation of self-reported cardiovascular problems in childhood cancer survivors by contacting general practitioners: feasibility and results
CONCLUSIONS: Despite excellent GP compliance, it was found unfeasible to validate self-reported cardiovascular problems via GPs because they do not serve as gatekeepers in the Swiss health care system. It is thus necessary to develop other validation methods to improve the quality of patient-reported outcomes.PMID:38459512 | DOI:10.1186/s12875-024-02322-7 (Source: Primary Care)

Obesity Predisposes Anthracycline-Treated Survivors of Childhood and Adolescent Cancers to Subclinical Cardiac Dysfunction
AbstractAnthracyclines are effective chemotherapeutics used in approximately 60% of pediatric cancer cases but have a well-documented risk of cardiotoxicity. Existing cardiotoxicity risk calculators do not include cardiovascular risk factors present at the time of diagnosis. The goal of this study is to leverage the advanced sensitivity of strain echocardiography to identify pre-existing risk factors for early subclinical cardiac dysfunction among anthracycline-exposed pediatric patients. We identified 115 pediatric patients with cancer who were treated with an anthracycline between 2013 and 2019. Peak longitudinal left ve...

Assessing quality of life in childhood cancer survivors at risk for hearing loss: a comparison of HEAR-QL and PROMIS measures
ConclusionThe HEAR-QL was more sensitive than the PROMIS in identifying QOL deficits in CCS at risk for hearing loss. The HEAR-QL should be considered in studies seeking to improve the QOL of CCS with hearing loss. (Source: Frontiers in Oncology)
