Primary central nervous system tumors survival in children in ten Colombian cities: a VIGICANCER report
CONCLUSION: We found that half of Colombia's children and adolescents with primary CNS tumors survive five years, compared to 70% to 80% in high-income countries. In addition to tumor biology and location, gross total resection was crucial for improved survival in this cohort. Systematic monitoring of survival and its determinants provides empirical data for guiding cancer control policies.PMID:38505512 | PMC:PMC10949889 | DOI:10.3389/fonc.2023.1326788 (Source: Cancer Control)

Case report: A familial B-acute lymphoblastic leukemia associated with a new germline pathogenic variant in PAX5. The first report in Mexico
B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (B-ALL) is one of the most common childhood cancers worldwide. Although most cases are sporadic, some familial forms, inherited as autosomal dominant traits with incomplete penetrance, have been described over the last few years. Germline pathogenic variants in transcription factors such as PAX5, IKZF1, and ETV6 have been identified as causal in familial forms. The proband was a 7-year-old Mexican girl diagnosed with high-risk B-ALL at five years and 11 months of age. Family history showed that the proband’s mother had high-risk B-ALL at 16 months of age. She received chemotherapy and ...

Cellular senescence in chronic lung diseases from newborns to the elderly: An update literature review
Biomed Pharmacother. 2024 Mar 18;173:116463. doi: 10.1016/j.biopha.2024.116463. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe role of cellular senescence in age-related diseases has been fully recognized. In various age-related-chronic lung diseases, the function of alveolar epithelial cells (AECs) is impaired and alveolar regeneration disorders, especially in bronchopulmonary dysplasia, pulmonary fibrosis (PF), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), cancer, etc. Except for age-related-chronic lung diseases, an increasing number of studies are exploring the role of cellular senescence in developmental chronic lung diseases, wh...

Patient and parent perspectives on paediatric cancer multidisciplinary team working and national advisory panels in the UK: a qualitative research study
Conclusion Several changes have been driven forward by this work, including the modification of NAP referral proformas to include additional information. Patient and parent perspectives are now embedded into a best practice model for the NAPs to promote personalised recommendations at national level. (Source: Archives of Disease in Childhood)

Severe Sepsis During Treatment for Childhood Leukemia and Sequelae Among Adult Survivors
CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: In this cohort study of long-term outcomes in survivors of pediatric leukemia, severe sepsis during anticancer therapy for leukemia was associated with a selectively increased risk for development of serious neurocognitive sequelae. Efforts to reduce the effects of anticancer therapy on long-term function and quality of life in survivors might include prevention of severe sepsis during therapy and early detection or amelioration of neurocognitive deficits in survivors of sepsis.PMID:38497960 | DOI:10.1001/jamanetworkopen.2024.2727 (Source: Cancer Control)

Scaling up and implementing the digital Survivorship Passport tool in routine clinical care - The European multidisciplinary PanCareSurPass project
Childhood cancer survivors (CCS), of whom there are about 500,000 living in Europe, are at an increased risk of developing health problems [1-6] and require lifelong Survivorship Care. There are information and knowledge gaps among CCS and healthcare providers (HCPs) about requirements for Survivorship Care [7-9] that can be addressed by the Survivorship Passport (SurPass), a digital tool providing CCS and HCPs with a comprehensive summary of past treatment and tailored recommendations for Survivorship Care. Outcome after Modern Proton Beam Therapy in Childhood Craniopharyngioma; Results of the Prospective Registry Study KiProReg
CONCLUSIONS: Our findings demonstrate favourable local control rates using modern PBT with acceptable late toxicities. Cyst growth within 12 month after radiotherapy is typically not associated with tumour progression. Longer FU has to be awaited to confirm results.PMID:38492813 | DOI:10.1016/j.ijrobp.2024.03.015 (Source: Cancer Control)

CONCLUSION: This study indicates that use of commercial databases to reconstruct residential locations may systematically bias results in case-control studies of childhood cancers.PMID:38492470 | DOI:10.1016/j.canep.2024.102561 (Source: Cancer Control)

Exploring childhood cancer survivor, parent, healthcare and community professionals ’ experiences of, and priorities for, using digital health to engage in physical activity: a mixed methods study
ConclusionsThis study identified key priorities that may help to promote physical activity behaviours among childhood cancer survivors. Further research is needed to integrate these priorities into health behaviour interventions and evaluate their feasibility and efficacy.Implications for Cancer SurvivorsIncorporating these multi-perspective priorities into future interventions will help to ensure their sustainability, acceptability, and uptake. This will in turn support childhood cancer survivors to develop a healthy lifestyle into adulthood. (Source: Journal of Cancer Survivorship)
