Transdiagnostic factors in the COVID-19 pandemic: Examining the role of childhood abuse and neglect in establishing latent profiles of risk and resilience
CONCLUSIONS: Results highlight the importance of childhood abuse and neglect in differentiating between the two distinct profiles of at-risk individuals. Implications for risk assessment and treatment in the context of potential traumatic stress are discussed.PMID:38693009 | DOI:10.1016/j.chiabu.2024.106808 (Source: Child Abuse and Neglect)

Understanding the Relation between Short Birth Spacing and Child Maltreatment: Are Associations Due to Parental History of Childhood Abuse and Neglect?
AbstractExisting literature documents connections between short birth spacing (birth-to-conception interval of under 18  months) and the risk of child maltreatment, but explanations for this relation are understudied. We hypothesise that short birth spacing predicts child maltreatment, and it mediates the association between maternal history of childhood maltreatment and their child's risk of abuse and neglect. We use data for second and higher parity children from the Prospective Study of Infant Development (n = 335) and fit logistic regression models with relevant covariates to examine the association between mater...

A Comparison of Two Statewide Datasets to Understand Population Prevalence of Substance Use in Pregnancy: Findings and Considerations for Policy & amp; Research
AbstractMental health conditions including substance use disorder are the leading cause of pregnancy-related deaths in the U.S. Unfortunately, fears of child protective services ’ involvement interfere with maternal self-disclosure of substance use in pregnancy. Seeking to identify more mothers with substance use disorder in pregnancy or at delivery, and responsive to changes to the federal Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act (CAPTA), Connecticut requires hospital pe rsonnel to submit a deidentified notification to CPS for all newborns with prenatal substance exposure. However, it is unknown whether this approach al...

Child Sexual Abuse Victimization and Parenting
Child sexual abuse is a problem of epidemic proportions. The official number of sexual abuse victims in the United States for 2020 was 58,092 (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 2023). However, this number represents only the tip of the iceberg: cases of sexual abuse reported to child protective services, investigated, and substantiated. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC; 2022) states that 1 in 4 girls and 1 in 13 boys living in the United States will experience sexual abuse in their lifetime. Reoffending after convictions related to child sexual exploitation material: Data from the German Federal Central Criminal Register
CONCLUSIONS: The mere existence of a conviction for a CSEM offense is not an indication that the convicted person poses a significant risk of committing child sexual abuse. To pinpoint such a risk more accurately, the following factors should be examined: the existence of offense-specific prior records, the presence of crossover-offending in the form of concurring offenses, and the age of the offender.PMID:38688115 | DOI:10.1016/j.chiabu.2024.106806 (Source: Child Abuse and Neglect)

40. Childhood Abuse and Ventral Bed Nucleus of the Stria Terminalis Stress Reactivity: A Transdiagnostic 7-Tesla Study
Childhood adversity dysregulates stress reactivity and predicts psychopathology, however underlying neural mechanisms are unclear. The paraventricular nucleus of the hypothalamus (PVN) is uniquely proximal in its control over autonomic and neuroendocrine stress responses. The bed nucleus of the stria terminalis (BNST) innervates the PVN and is also a heterogenous, proximal stress-control structure; dorsal (d) BNST is predominantly preautonomic, while ventral (v) BNST is predominantly viscerosensory. 345. Childhood Trauma and Emotional Neglect Impairs the Adolescent Development of Gray Matter Microstructure
Early life adversity (ELA; childhood trauma, abuse and neglect) impacts the development of brain macrostructure, including cortical thickness and (sub)cortical volumes as measured using MRI. However, less is known about gray matter microstructure, including myelination, with preliminary animal and post-mortem human studies suggesting less myelination in adulthood after ELA. Here, we present the first longitudinal study of ELA and brain microstructure in adolescence. (Source: Biological Psychiatry)

337. Beyond Threat and Deprivation: What Information Do We Need to Effectively Gauge the Association Between Maltreatment and Brain Morphometry?
Different approaches to operationalizing childhood maltreatment have been used to analyze its impact on health outcomes. The ACEs study adopted a unidimensional approach based on the number of maltreatment types. McLaughlin and colleagues emphasized distinguishing deprivation from physical threats. We developed the Maltreatment and Abuse Chronology of Exposure (MACE) scale to assess timing in addition to type. (Source: Biological Psychiatry)

312. Effects of Early Life Stress on Neurocognitive Functions in Children: A Large-Scale Replication Study
Early life stress refers to childhood maltreatment, such as abuse and neglect, as well as household challenges. Previous studies suggest that early life stress is associated with aberrant neurocognitive functions, which are risk factors of various psychopathology. However, such associations are often mixed and inconsistent across studies, and this might be attributed to the small sample size. To address this, our study seeks to replicate the previous findings using a large-scale longitudinal dataset. (Source: Biological Psychiatry)

This study examined whether a) maternal childhood abuse or neglect is associated with infant cortisol output, b) infant cortisol is associated with infant limbic brain volumes, and c) infant cortisol mediates any relation between maternal childhood maltreatment and infant limbic brain volumes. Nitrous oxide-induced myeloneuropathy in a Thai adolescent: a case report
Paediatr Int Child Health. 2024 Apr 29:1-4. doi: 10.1080/20469047.2024.2344403. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTNitrous oxide, an inhalational anaesthetic, is popular with adolescents worldwide as an accessible recreational drug which induces a euphoric effect. However, chronic abuse leads to serious complications such as myeloneuropathy and bone marrow suppression by inactivation of vitamin B12. A 17-year-old girl presented with nitrous oxide-induced myeloneuropathy. She reported chronic nitrous oxide inhalation for 10 months and was admitted to the emergency department on account of repeated falls for 2 weeks. She also had...
